« Pete! Wait for me! »
« Hurry! »
« You're too fast, wait! »
« Ahah! First! »
« That's not fair! Cheater! »
« Ahah! You're so lame! »
The two young boys rushed into the abandoned car, parked in a desert property. The air was still hot on this Friday late afternoon, every child walking back home after school.
Pete, who was the first to arrive, won the race. Giving him the right to drive the motor-less car. The boys jumped in it, Pete sat in the driver sit. Tam who was still trying to catch his breath, was the passenger.
« Vrrrrrouumm »
« Where are we going? »
« Krungthep* !"
« My mom said only farangs* live there and you can easily be killed by motorcycles. »
« But there you can eat Khanom chan* and Khanom la* the size of a big cat! »
Little Pete was moving the steering wheel quickly, looking afar, focus.
« You are lying this not possible! »
« When I grow up, I'll show you! »
Pete was playing pretend, driving very seriously. His gestures were very skilled for a 8-year-old boy. Tam was somewhat impressed, looking at him with admiration.
As Pete was still very much into his role, Tam put his hand in the front pocket of his school uniform. The sound that came out of it made Pete stopped and looked towards Tam's hand.
« Hey, what is this? »
Tam was holding a bunch of little rocks in his palm, all of different colors and shapes.
Still digging into his pocket, he then organized the rocks meticulously on his lap, counting every one of them.
« That's my collection. »
« You like rocks? »
Tam nodded, embarrassed.
« I pick them up every time I see one I like. Mom wants me to throw them away so I hide them in my room»
« Wow, those are so cool! This one is so pretty, look! »
Little Pete pointed at a heart-shaped dark garnet color rock.
Tam, lifted his gaze quickly looking at him, startled. For the first time someone didn't make fun of him. It even seemed that Pete was genuinely impressed by his collection.
As a shy smile appeared on Tam's lips, he took the heart-shaped rock and handed it at Pete.
« Here, I have plenty. »
« So cool! Thank you! »
Pete took the rock in his hand, amazed. His head leaned forward, looking at every details.
Tam was staring at Pete. The two 8 years old boys were different. Pete's eyes were bigger than his. His hair was also lighter. He was taller and his shoulders wider. Even his voice seemed to be deeper. Tam checked down, frustrated. Even his legs were bigger.
« When you will be in Krungthep you can sell it and buy a looot of Khanom chan. My mother say that people are fighting over very, very pretty rocks in the city! »
« So cool! We will buy a lot to eat together! »
« When I grow up, I will sell all of them and be rich so I could buy all the Pokemon's cards of the world. »
