CHAPTER NINE | A GHOST ALONG THE MISSISSIPPI

THE UNTHINKABLE HAD COME TO PASS. Klaus had woken in the night by the stench of blood next to him, but it was not just anybody's blood. It was Cami's. Devastation erupted inside him as he stared upon the corpse of the woman he loved, a slit right across her throat as dried blood covered her skin and the bedsheets. However, as he clutched the woman desperately in his arms and pleaded that she was not really dead, a heavy gasp escaped her lips as she reawakened. Cami was in transition thanks to Aurora, who compelled her to drink her blood and then slit her throat the moment she knew Klaus was in love with her.

"Klaus." Riley's sympathetic tone rang through the Hybrid's ears as she and Elijah stepped into the study. "How's she doing?"

"She's just risen from the dead. As soon as she feeds, her mood will change for the better." Klaus immediately discarded any possibly that Cami would not complete the transition. "In the meantime, these attacks need to be answered! Our retribution must be swift, and it must be brutal!"

"Agreed." Elijah was quick to cut off Klaus' enraged ramblings. "After the Serratura has been recovered. Freya's pendant is also missing."

"And along with that, the essence of your brother, Finn." Riley exasperatedly sighed. "Wonderful."

"So let he imbecile stay lost. Our business today is to finish off the De Martels!"

"No, brother. Think." Elijah shook his head. "Think. Tristan needs the most powerful witch in the city to activate that weapon— a Regent."

"Vincent, who was once possessed by Finn!" Klaus stormed toward the exit with a violent rage in his eyes, until Riley sped in front of him and blocked his path. "Out of the way, Riley."

"Do you really think that right now, given what she's going through, Cami will appreciate you being anywhere other than at her side?" The Evans girl attempted to reason with the Hybrid.

"She's right. Stay here. She'll need you, brother. I shall handle this."

"Ugh!" Cami irritably winced as she stumbled weakly into the study, gripping against the walls to keep her supported as she followed Klaus. "The light is killing me."

Alarmed by her presence, Riley's eyes flickered up from the grimoire she was reading. "You'll adjust." Klaus shrugged.

"Why does the music sound so loud?" Cami's breathing suddenly became erratic. "Why does everything hurt so much?"

The Evans girl closed the grimoire and tilted her head toward Cami. "It's part of it. The heightened senses will stop hurting if you choose to feed."
