Chapter One

Reine

The small town of Bon Temps fell under the humid shroud of darkness. Many folks were just eating their suppers or sitting down in front of the television to catch up on the latest drama of the Bachelor. However, there was a small group of people that resided in the bar Merlott's. The building was crowded; the servers were busy running around taking people's orders while the cooks in the back grilled fat burgers for the customers to eat.

Reine Stackhouse hurried to and fro, taking people's orders. "Evening," the girl said with a charming smile. "What can I get you?" She asked the couple that were sitting in her section. The woman raised her brow as she ran her eyes over the girl. She didn't even look old enough to drive, let alone work in a bar. "Aren't you a little young to be working here?" The older woman inquired. "How do your parents feel wearing something so revealing? Personally, I wouldn't want my daughter running around in an outfit like that, acting like a little tramp."

"Eveline!" the man nearly shouted. "Leave her alone!"

"Someone needed to say something, Henry." The woman chided.

Reine rolled her eyes as she tried to bite her tongue. It was getting harder as the woman continued to talk. "What can I get you?" The girl asked again.

"Don't you have something else to wear? Those shorts are too short and that shirt is way too tight for someone your age. I'm sure your mother would be appalled if she saw what you were wearing." The girl was wearing a tight white shirt and a pair of black booty shorts.

"My mother doesn't much care about what I wear," Reine replied in a matter-of-fact tone. "Now, are you going to order or not?"

"Hmph!" the woman huffed as she looked over the menu once more. "I'll take your chicken tenders with fries and a coke."

"And you?" Reine asked the man as she finished scribbling down the order on her pad of paper.

"I'll have the cheeseburger with fries and a root beer." The man told the girl as he handed her his menu.

"I'll be right out with your order." Reine hurried and left the table, leaving the couple to discuss her attire between themselves. Making her way over to the kitchen, she let a sigh leave her lips as she tried to gather herself. She didn't have a relationship with her mother or father. They had passed away when she was a few months old. Her Gran and her older siblings, Sookie and Jason, raised her.

Once Reine reached the window to the kitchen, she relayed the order. "I need the chicken tenders, a cheeseburger, with two orders of fries." The girl told the short-order cook.

"I'm hurt, sugar." Lafayette clutched at his heart. "I didn't get no hello or nothin!"

A smile crept its way to her lips. "I'm sorry Lafayette. How are you tonight?"

"I'm doin' good darlin'. How's your night goin'?" The man asked as he began to cook up the food for the order.

"Well, if it's going to be anything like it started out, it's going to be a long night."

"Ain't it always Rae?" Lafayette smiled as he flipped the burger on the grill. "Just give 'em as good as you're gettin'."

"I'll try." The young woman laughed as she turned to leave to get the drinks ready for her table. As she was filling up the glasses, she heard someone come up behind her. "Don't let them get to you, Rae. You look fine." She heard her sister say. Rae looked over her shoulder and gave her sister a sweet smile. "Thanks Sook."

"Do you want me to wait on that table?" Sookie asked her sister.

"No, no, it's fine. I got it." The girl replied as she finished filling the glasses. Once she was done, she placed them on a serving tray.
