Chapter Eighteen
The Intruder
As soon as Reine made her way into the house, she could hear her Gran rummaging around in the cabinets for something and other. The young woman went to the kitchen and leaned against the door frame, watching her grandmother as she prepared a hot cup of tea. "I think the meeting went well tonight." Rae commented.
"I do too, honey." Adele said as she placed the kettle on the hot stove. "You seem to get along really well with Mr. Compton."
"He's a nice man." Reine replied with a slight smile on her lips. "He made me nervous at first." The girl admitted.
"And now?" Adele pried for information.
"I'm used to being around him now. I just wish every time I'm around him, his fangs wouldn't come out."
"I'm sure he can't help that, sweetheart. Maybe you smell good to him?" The shrill sound of the kettle going off filled the kitchen. Adele hurried and took it off the stove and poured some of the hot water into the teacups. She then plopped two tea bags into the hot water and added some sugar to the liquid.
"Yeah, he says I smell good." Reine confirmed as she took a seat at the kitchen table. Her grandmother placed the teacup in front of her and joined her at the table.
"Do you like Mr. Compton?"
"As a friend, yes. Even if I thought of him in another way, he's so wrapped up with Sookie he wouldn't even look my way. Why, Gran?"
"I was just curious. You two would make a cute couple if he was around your age."
"Around my age? Gran, he was born in the 1800s. He's passed the "around my age phase." Rein laughed at the thought. He was handsome, however, she just didn't see him that way. Besides, if she did, it would make things complicated between her and Sookie. She could tell Sookie liked Bill, and she didn't want to ruin a possible relationship between them.
Reine lifted her teacup and blew on the hot liquid before taking a sip.
"I just want you girls to find nice men to be with." Adele attempted to defend her questioning.
"One day, Gran." Reine took another drink of her tea.
"What about that Riven boy? He seems fond of you."
"I just met him today, Gran. It's too early to say." Rae finished her tea and took the teacup over to the sink. She went over to her grandma and placed a kiss on her cheek. "I think I'm going to head upstairs and get ready for bed."
"Alright, honey. I'll see you in the morning."
"Night, Gran," Reine said as she made her way up the stairs to her room. Once she reached her room, she went straight to her dresser and changed into a black pair of pjs. The young woman jumped into bed, grabbed her book from the bedside table, and started to read.
About thirty minutes passed, the only sound that filled the room was the turning of pages. Reine was becoming so relaxed that she nearly dozed off. The young woman decided to close her eyes for just a moment as she laid her book on her chest. Her eyes were only closed for a few minutes when a blood-curdling scream filled the air. Reine's eyes shot open . She jumped from the bed, running for the door to see what was the matter.
The sound led her to the kitchen. What she walked in on she wasn't prepared for. There was a man in a ski mask stabbing her grandmother repeatedly in the chest. "Stop!" Reine screamed as she ran over to her grandmother. She pushed as hard as she could on the man's shoulder, causing him to stumble back. It gave her enough time to get between her grandma and the intruder.
