Chapter Six

The Tornado

The succulent smell of sausage wafted through the house. As soon as the scent reached Reine's room, her eyes shot open as she breathed it in. It took Reine a minute to realize that she was in her room. The last thing she remembered was Bill coming towards her after the fight. Then everything went black. She slowly sat up in bed. As she did, she realized not a single part of her was sore. The girl hurried and went over to her full-length mirror that was in the corner of her room. Rae looked over herself for a moment. There were no bruises or cuts. She didn't even feel like she had broken anything. She felt perfectly fine.

Reine decided she needed a nice, long, hot shower. She went over to her closet and grabbed some clothes to change into, then made her way down the hall to the bathroom. She quickly got out of her uniform for work and turned the water on as hot as it would go. Soon enough, fog filled the small room and covered the bathroom mirror. Rae jumped into the shower, letting the hot water wash over her. Rae closed her eyes, tilted her head back, and took a deep, slow breath. Images flashed through her mind. A creek flowed through the woods. She could smell the oak trees, she could feel the cold water against her skin, even the sun warming her body. Reine shook her head and tried to concentrate on what she was doing. She hurriedly finished her shower and jumped out of the tub.

After drying off, she wiped down the mirror and looked at her reflection. How had she healed so quickly? There wasn't a single scratch on her. Perhaps Sookie knew how she healed. Reine didn't remember what happened after she saw Bill. Everything after was black.

Sighing, Reine dropped the towel, it pooled around her feet as she grabbed her clothes and got dressed. Thankfully, she didn't have to go to work until this afternoon. It was Sookie's day off so she would need to take the car to get to work.

Reine ran a brush through her long hair and pulled it back into a ponytail. When she finished with her hair, she put a little makeup on, picked up her clothes, and made her way out of the bathroom.

Rae hurried down the stairs and went to put her clothes in the washer. As she did she could hear her sister talking in the kitchen to her Gran. "I don't think Jesus would mind if somebody was vampire."

"I don't either, honey." Reine heard her Gran reply as she joined the two in the kitchen. "Good morning!" Rae happily greeted her grandmother and sister. Reine placed a kiss on her Gran's cheek and took a seat at the table. "Something smells amazing." The girl commented as her grandmother placed a plate full of food down in front of her.

"Now you eat up." Gran fondly gave the order to her granddaughter. "You have a big day today. I want you to have energy for work."

Rae smiled and nodded as she cut into the sausage on her plate. "Is this sausage different from what you usually make?" Sookie asked her grandma.

"No."

"Huh. It tastes so much more complex than it usually does." Sookie told the woman as she took another bite of her food.

"Oh, dear, you think it's gone bad?" Gran asked with a worried expression crossing her features.

"I think it tastes amazing." Rae commented as she filled her mouth with some scrambled eggs.

"It's delicious. It's like I can close my eyes and I can see the farm the pig lived on and feel the sun and rain on my face and even taste the earth that the herbs grew out of." Sookie tried to explain the taste of the meat.

"That's so weird..." Rae replied.

"What?"

"When I was in the shower it was like I could see where the water came from. I could smell the oak trees that surrounded the creek. Feel the warmth of the sun on my body and the cool water against my skin... Our imaginations are working in overdrive today." Reine chuckled and went back to eating her breakfast. Just as she put the bite of food into her mouth the sound of the screen door opening filled the kitchen. Reine looked over her shoulder to see Tara. The teenager gave her friend a sweet smile. "Mornin' Tara."
