Chapter Twenty-Three

The Goddess

Reine was quiet as she stared at the plate of food in front of her. She needed answers. Why was Eric so persistent on making her his? Why did Bill feel the need to protect her? Did it have to do with the possibility that she wasn't human? And if she wasn't human then what was she? What connections did she have to these Greek Gods? There were so many questions, but she wasn't sure how to get the answers.

Reine stood from her seat, turned on her heel and made her way towards the doors to the restaurant. "Reine!" She heard Bill shout her name as she left the building. Once she was outside, she looked round to see if she could find Eric. As soon as she spotted the vampire getting into a red vintage corvette, she ran over to him and grabbed hold of his shoulder. She spun him around, forcing him to face her. However, as soon as she touched him, she felt the earth leave from beneath her feet. It happened so fast that it took her a moment to realize that she had just been thrown across the parking lot. As soon as realization hit her, she felt her head slam into the side of a car. The impact caused her vision to go black for a moment.

Before she could stand, something took hold of the front of her dress and lifted her off the ground. "I should rip your little hands off for even touching him!" Pam snarled as her grip tightened around the fabric of the second hand dress.

Reine's eyes darkened, the whites of her eyes slowly clouded to black as she balled up her fist and hit the vampire as hard as she could in the side of the face. The impact of the punch was enough to make the vampire release her and stumble back. "Reine!" Bill yelled as he came up on the scene.

Rae ignored the man as she strode over to the female vampire and took hold of her chin, forcing her to look into her eyes. "Don't touch me again."

Pam was taken aback for a moment as she tried to gather herself. What was this girl? Before she could reply, she watched as the girl called upon the shadows. They slithered toward her and leisurely wrapped around her heels. "Ok! Ok, I won't touch you again! As long as you won't touch Eric."

Reine leaned in, a simper forming on her lips as she took the front of Pam's dress. She whispered just enough so Pam could hear. Although she was sure Bill and Eric could hear her as well. "I'll touch whoever I damn well want. Now, go back to your master." Reine said as she pushed against the vampire's chest. Pam nodded and made her way back toward Eric. Rae's eyes traveled over the blonde vampire. He held a look of interest on his face. "Why do you want me?" Rae pointed the question at the vampire.

"You're unique if you haven't noticed." Eric replied as he sped over to her. "It would be to my benefit if you were my human."

"Why... Do you want to claim me?" Reine repeated her question.

"Protection, your blood..." At the thought of her blood, his fangs extended. "Your body..."

"I don't need protection..." Reine spat out the words.

This was when Bill joined the conversation. "I'd have to disagree with you on that, Reine. Or don't you remember what happened yesterday?"

Rae's jaw clenched when she heard the vampire. He was right. She needed protection right now. What happened yesterday had caught her off guard. She hadn't expected someone in her house killing her Gran. "What happened yesterday?" Eric questioned the human.

Reine's head shot toward Eric's voice. "If you must know, someone came to my house, killed my Gran and tried to kill me. If it wasn't for Bill, I wouldn't be alive."

"He gave you his blood?" Eric voiced.

"How else do you think I'm alive?"

"All the more reason for me to claim you. It's clear you're not safe in your little town." Eric told the girl.

"Eric, you can't be serious..." Pam said as she looked from her maker to the girl. "I know you want her, but whatever she is-"

"Are you questioning my actions, Pam?" Eric asked with a raised brow.

"No, I just-"

"Good." Eric interrupted. "Speaking of that, what are you?" The vampire asked the human.

"I don't know. I thought maybe you or Bill might have some answers for me."

"Besides your obvious physical attributes. Do you have other specialties besides controlling shadows?" Eric queried.

"She's a Divine Child." The sound of another man's voice filled the air.

Reine and the vampires looked in the direction of the sound. She was surprised to see Riven. "What are you doing here, Riven?"

"I followed you." The man informed the girl.

"Ignoring your stalkerish tendency, what is a Divine Child?" Reine questioned as the man came towards them.

"You're the daughter of Hades and Persephone. You're a goddess. Or you will be once you let go of your human propensity."

"How is that even possible? My parents are Michelle and Corbett Stackhouse."

"Your parents- your real parents placed you in your adopted mothers womb after she had an affair when you were still an egg. In other words, currently you are a demi-goddess. Once you go through the change you'll become a goddess. Haven't you ever wondered why you look so different from your siblings?"

"I-I just thought I took after one of my great grandparents or something." Reine paused and looked over Riven. "How do you know all this? How do I know you're even telling me the truth?"

"I'm a Divine Child as well." Riven informed the girl.

"What do you want with her?" Bill asked the young man.

"I was sent to protect her-"

"Well you're doing a hell of a job." Reine said under her breath. "Where were you when Gran and I were attacked?"

"I'm only allowed to step in on minor attacks. If you find yourself in a situation like yesterday I can't help you." Riven informed the girl.

"Why?"

"You need to die to trigger the change." Riven looked Reine over for a moment before he spoke again. "Once you trigger the change you'll have more control over your abilities."

"Which are..." Reine pried.

"You're the Goddess of death, weather, vegetation, and beauty. You take after your mother and grandmother mostly."

"I assume death is from Hades and the weather is from Zeus?"

"You're also a guider of souls. You should have started your training yesterday with the ferryman."

"What if I choose not to do this?" Reine questioned Riven. Bill, Eric, and Pam had all fell silent as they listened carefully to the man.

"You don't have that choice I'm afraid." Riven told her. "Now, if we're done here I need to get going. I have a meeting with some people about your new position."

Reine only nodded in response. She had a feeling she would see Riven again sooner than she might like. The young woman watched as the man slowly disappeared from view. "Well, isn't this fun." Pam commented.

"I've heard of Divine children but I never thought they existed." Eric said. "That explains your blood."

"What do you mean?" Reine asked.

"Your blood has a gold tinge to it and sparkles. You have ichor in your veins. It's addictive to supernatural creatures but deadly to humans." Eric informed her. Even the thought of her blood made his fangs extend.

Reine took a deep breath and slowly let it out. "Bill, can we leave? I've had enough of learning what I am."

Bill nodded. "Of course."

"Goodbye Eric." Reine said as she and Bill made their way over to the car.

"Goodbye Reine." Eric responded as he watched her leave.
