Chapter Three
Fang-Bangers
Aureate rays of light shone through the freshly pressed white curtains, brushing against Reine's sleeping features. The young woman squinted her eyes and rolled over in bed, pulling the covers over her head. The sound of the door slowly opening caught her attention. It didn't take long before something jumped up on her bed and climbed up on her. Pawing at the side of her owner, the cat attempted to get comfortable. "Morning to you too, Tina." The only response she got from the cat was a satisfied purring. "Are you going to let me sleep?" The girl asked as she peeked out from beneath the covers. The same as before, the cat only purred. "Alright, alright, I'm up."
Flinging off the blankets, Reine slid out of bed and went to get dressed for the day. "So where is everyone, hm?" Rae asked the cat.
Tina just purred in response as she twirled around and pawed at the blankets. "I suppose I'll have to look for them myself." Reine said as she pulled up a pair of jean shorts. Once she finished getting dressed, she brushed her hair, pulled it back into a ponytail, and made her way downstairs. As she stepped onto the main floor, she was met with silence. Gran wasn't making noise in the kitchen, and from where she stood she couldn't hear her sister talking their grandmother's ear off.
Reine went into the kitchen and opened the fridge. Someone had made fresh ice tea. The teenager went to grab herself a glass from the cupboard and poured herself some to drink. As she put the pitcher back into the fridge, she heard the sound of someone pulling up to the house. The music from the truck was playing so loudly that she knew right away who it was. It was her brother, Jason. Reine placed the glass of ice tea on the counter and went to the front door. She hurried out the door to see what sort of trouble her big brother had gotten himself into today.
"Hey!" Reine heard her brother say as she came up behind him. "How come you didn't tell me you beat up the Rattrays last night?" Jason asked his sister, Sookie.
"I haven't even seen you since then." Sookie replied.
"It's not like they didn't deserve it." Reine said, joining in on the conversation.
"Don't tell me she dragged you into this too, Rae."
"Sook didn't drag me into anything. I followed her to see if she was okay. And good thing I did because she clearly wasn't!"
"Where's Gran?" Jason asked his sisters.
"Hanging the laundry out back- and you keep your voice down. I don't want her to know about any of this." Sookie told her brother as she repositioned herself in the lawn chair. She decided today was a good day to work on her tan.
"Fortenberry couldn't wait till I got to work this morning to tell me all about it!" Jason informed his sisters.
"Hoyt? How does he know what happened? He wasn't even there." Reine added to the conversation. It didn't really surprise her. Word traveled faster in this town than a forest fire.
"He went over to the Rats last night to buy some weed. And Denise drove up like she wanted to kill somebody. She was so mad. The only way she would sell him any weed was if he would drive Mack to the hospital in Monroe."
"Jason," Reine began. "Did Hoyt tell you that Mack came after us with a knife?"
"Shit! You want me to kick his ass?" Jason asked his sister as he wrapped his arm around her shoulders and placed a kiss on top of her head.
"I already took care of that, thank you." Sookie informed her brother. She knew last night was a really bad situation. Adding her little sister to the equation only made it that much worse. She had been angry before they brought the knife into the fight. However, when they pointed the knife at Rae, her anger amplified.
