Chapter Five
First Taste
Wave after wave of pain rippled through her body. Reine was in agony, so much so that she couldn't even form enough energy to cry. Blood. That was all she could discern. The copper taste made her nauseated as it slid down her throat into her stomach. All she wanted was for this to end.
Perhaps this was how she would die? Just a few days shy of her eighteenth birthday. It was far from a glamorous death. She was certain that her current predicament was one she never thought of when imagining her death. "Where's your fucking chain now?" Reine heard Mack yell at her crumpled sister, who was on the ground. She was sure that Sookie was in just as much pain as she.
"Bitch!" That single word caught Reine's attention. Once the word was spoken, it felt as if time slowed down. Rae didn't know why, but she slowly turned her head while attempting to focus on something that seemed to scintillate. It was a soft gold light that continued to flicker to life as if it were a warm gleam from a fire. 'Stand' The most beautiful voice of a woman came from the light.
Reine laid still for a moment, her breathing ragged. She didn't think she could stand. She could barely keep her eyes open, let alone stand. 'Stand!' The girl gathered what little strength she had left while the Rattray's attention was on her sister. "Dumb-ass ponytail!" She heard Denise shout just before landing a kick at her sister's ribs.
Rae's legs shook as if this were the first time she ever stood. Nevertheless -no matter how much she wobbled- she still stood.
"Here we go." Mack said as he kicked Sookie's jaw. "I love you." The man told his wife.
Reine didn't know what to do next. The voice had gone silent. She wasn't even certain she had actually heard anything. The girl looked down at the ground as she tried to steady herself. However, something she noticed was a reddish-gold substance that stained the ground. Where the liquid touched greenage began to sprout from the ground. Brow furrowed, she stretched out her fingers, making a poor attempt to touch the sprouts. As she moved her fingers, the buds began to sway with the slightest of gestures.
"I love you too, baby." Denise replied to her husband. Just as she was about to continue to beat the shit out of the oldest Stackhouse sister, she noticed from the corner of her eye that the younger one was attempting to stand. "Well, look at you." Denise said as she strode over to the girl. She balled up her fist, held it back as far as it would go, and prepared to punch the teenager in the face. Though, before she could make her move, she heard the sound of a dog growling. The mutt was charging towards her husband.
"Well, fuck you, Fido." Mack said, temporarily getting distracted from the beatings. Before he or his wife could continue their work, he heard a sound not too far from where he stood. "The fuck?" Mack looked around in the darkness, attempting to find the source of the noise.
The next thing that happened, neither of the Rattrays were expecting. Mack flew across the deserted parking lot into the darkness. "Show your fucking face, freak!" Denise screamed at the creature in the darkness.
Reine, lost in her own world, she continued to try to get her footing. She couldn't take her eyes from the green buds that harmoniously swayed. The only thing that drew her attention from the plants was another voice. 'Reine.' The deep voice said, her name echoing in the breeze. 'Reine...'
The teenager forced her blurred gaze away from the plants, to where the sound of the voice came from. Instead of a golden hue, she was greeted with darkness. However, it wasn't normal darkness. This was a void of shadows that swirled around as if it were beginning to form something.
