Chapter Twenty-One

The Taste

Reine stood alone in the guest room that Bill had provided for her. She was silent as she slipped off her shoes, her bare feet contacted with the old wood floors. The young woman knew she needed to rest, but she couldn't with blood caked on her skin. Reine moved quietly, hoping not to disturb Bill as she searched for a bathroom. She gradually made her way out of her room and went out into the hall. Rae went to the door across the hall. However, when she opened the door, she saw it was just another guest bedroom. She opened the door that was next to the second guest room. Thankfully, luck was on her side. She found the bathroom. As soon as the door was shut, she removed her clothes and jumped into the shower. The water was freezing, however; she welcomed the feeling. Reine stared down at the tub and watched as the water turned a mixture of gold and red color.

Her gaze moved from the red water to her abdomen and chest. Fingers prodded her skin where she had been stabbed. There wasn't a single mark marring her skin. She would need to thank Bill properly tomorrow. Although she didn't think a simple thank-you card would do the trick. She would need to come up with something bigger to reciprocate him for saving her life.

A sigh escaped her lips as she tilted her head back and let the water run over her hair. Why wasn't she a blubbering mess in the corner right now? Any normal girl would be sobbing. Perhaps she was still in shock? Maybe tomorrow would be different?

Reine attempted to ignore the nagging questions as she shut off the water and rung out her long hair. She stepped out of the tub and went to one of the cabinets, opening it to find a few folded towels. Grabbing one towel, she quickly dried off and wrapped it tightly around her form. Sighing, she picked up her bloodied close and went to open the door. As she did she ran straight into Bill. Almost instantly, her face turned beet red. "S-sorry, I should have asked to use your bathroom first." Reine stumbled over her words as she took a step back.

A slight smile formed on Bill's lips. "No apologies needed. I thought you may need a towel. I wasn't sure if there were any in there or not." Bill said as he clutched the material in his hands. The man did his best to keep his eyes on her face and not to look upon her body. "If you have everything, I'll leave you so you can rest." As he turned to leave, he felt a hand go to his forearm and stop him. "Wait..." He heard Reine say as he turned to look at her.

"I don't know how to tell you how thankful I am that you saved me tonight. If you hadn't come..."

"I know, Reine. It's alright." Bill softly patted her hand and gave her a comforting smile. "Just try to get some sleep. You need your rest."

Rae stood on the tips of her toes and placed a kiss on Bill's cold, rough cheek. "Thank you, Bill." She said as she made her way back to her room. However, before shutting the door, she looked back at Bill, a sweet smile playing on her lips. "Good night, have sweet dreams."

The young woman went inside her room, shutting the door behind her. Once she was alone, she went over to the bed and let the towel drop to the ground as she grabbed a gray nightgown from her bag. Once she slipped the cotton material over her form, she began brushing her long hair before getting into bed. Letting a heavy breath out, she laid down and closed her eyes, attempting to find a dreamless sleep.

It didn't take long -a few hours perhaps- before Bill was standing at his guest's door. She was so beautiful; the towel clinging tightly to her damp skin, her long hair left free. He needed to see her again. He had to. The man couldn't help himself. The vampire quietly opened the door, hoping to not disturb her as he made his way over to the bed. She was asleep. The creature gently caressed her cheek with the backs of his fingers. She was so delicate. Perhaps even more so than Sookie. Sookie was strong willed, outgoing, and a fighter. Then there was Reine, someone who needed protection from everything. From the time he laid his eyes on her, that was all he wanted to do was protect her. The urge was so great he finally acted on it. However, his feelings towards her sister held him back, more so than he would like to admit. If he was truthful, he wanted to claim both sisters as his. Sookie took priority, though.
