Gideon waited for his turn to show off his project. There was just one kid ahead of him that was already showing theirs. A cliché volcano, but the lava was blue instead of orange and red. Some people clapped, it was not much though. "Next one coming up is Gideon Corduroy!" Lian Chiu, Candy's mother, announced.
Gideon was nervous, but mostly excited. He took his project in front of a crowd, who watched curiously as they whispered and wondered what was beneath the blanket. "Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for your attention, I hope you all like it as much as I loved making it!" Gideon said, practically bouncing. Some people in the crowd thought that was adorable, letting an "Ooooown" in adorableness. Gideon giggled. "I present to all of you. . ." he took the blanket off. "The Constellation Lamp!"
Many people in the crowd felt confused, Gideon rushed to turn off the light, the lamp was the only thing that glowed in the room. He rushed back to his project and tripped on the way, getting concerned looks. "I'm okay!" he said, quickly standing up. Gideon stood behind of the lantern and did something the crowd didn't see, soon enough the lamp's colour changed to dark blue, out of it a bunch of constellations appeared. The crowd was amazed by Gideon's invention. Little did they know that it wasn't the lamp doing this, it was actually his amulet. Again, it wasn't against the rules. And who could prove it?
But Gideon knew someone was aware of his tricks.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Pacifica, Tiffany, Delilah and Mabel had already gotten their artefacts, now there was only one goal left. Reach the ending line. The sound of their footsteps was the only thing heard, everyone was too focused, Mabel and Pacifica were side by side, right behind them was Tiffany and Delilah. One step, two steps, three steps.
Faster.
Four steps, five steps, six steps.
Faster!
Eight steps, nine steps, ten steps.
Faster!
More and more steps, the ending line was close, touching is not allowed, but even if it was, Mabel didn't care, she just wanted to end this whole race.
Run.
Faster.
Not fast enough.
Keep running.
Don't let her win.
You've won since you got here.
You can't lose now.
Their foreheads were sweating, their breaths were slow. Pacifica was already used to running, but it had been a while since the last time she ran such a distance. But that didn't stop her. She came to win. Okay, maybe Pacifica is competitive too.
Closer and closer they got, close enough, it was right in front of them. Pacifica only stopped when a loud whistle announced the ending of the race. The others quickly got there as well, although behind. Pacifica leaned down a bit and supported herself with her hands on her knees, she had never run that fast. Mabel also got down, cleaning the sweat from her forehead, as she stretched her arms.
Tiffany approached Pacifica, also seeming tired. "You okay?"
"Yeah. . ." Pacifica panted as she said. "I'm. . . fine." she looked up. "I. . . Did I just. . . Win?"
Tiffany smiled. "Yeah, you did!" she put an arm around Pacifica's shoulders and pulled her up. "Congrats, girl!"
Pacifica caught her breath slowly, still processing it all. "I won." peals of laughter escaped her throat. "Oh my gosh— I— I just won!"
