Pacifica was at the checkout counter of the Corduroy Shop, legs crossed over the counter and journal close to her chest. Her family's business was doing quite well considering the things they sold there were old or used stuff, like books, toys and clothes. She took advantage of the peace and her having a little free time for herself to take a better look on the journal. Sure, she had gone over it multiple times, but now that she knew the spells it actually had, maybe she should actually memorise them. Why didn't she do that before if she knew the journal was a real guide of magic? She also asks that to herself.
The door opened, a tall man with a lean forehead and an upsidedown question mark shirt walked inside of the shack with a smile on his face. He looked at the checkout counter, being surprised by seeing Pacifica there. She saw him approaching and raised her head a bit, hiding the content showing in her journal. She raised an eyebrow, showing visible confusion, but said nothing. She just waited for the man to tell her what he wanted or needed from her.
"Hey kid, why are you on the counter?" he asked.
"Um, I'm helping my dad at work." Pacifica replied. "His employee wasn't coming to work, and I thought I should give a check to what this shop was actually about, so yeah, here I am," she added. "Why do you ask?"
"I'm the employee," the man said. He held out his hand for a handshake. "My name is Soos, it's nice to meet you."
Pacifica blinked in surprise. She took her legs off the counter and adjusted her posture, shaking his hand. "I'm Pacifica."
"That's a nice name, reminds me of the Pacific Ocean," he chuckled. "When did you come to town?"
"When the Corduroys adopted me." Pacifica said.
Soos looked shocked. "Oh, you're the girl Gideon kept talking about."
Pacifica cocked her head in confusion. "Gideon told you about me?"
"Via telepathy, something like that."
Pacifica's eyes went wide. "You know about—"
"His amulet? Yes, I do." Soos replied, walking next to Pacifica. She stood up and Soos sat down on the chair. Pacifica cleaned the (almost-sure of being there) dust and sat down. "You know, my grandmother is a witch, like, tarot and things like that."
Stars could be seen in Pacifica's eyes. "Really?"
"Yep," Soos crossed his legs and put his elbow on the counter, resting his head on his hand. "I grew up learning about spiritism, card tricks, how to detect real and fake magic, how to track magic, things like that."
A smile made its way to Pacifica's face. "That's so cool!"
Soos' smile grew a bit. "I know, right?" he chuckled. "Say, how old are you?"
"I'm thirteen, turning fourteen by the end of June."
"Cool."
"What about you?" Pacifica asked.
"Mine's in the beginning of July." Soos replied.
"Just like Gideon, that's nice." Pacifica said.
"Excuse me," a tourist said, calling their attention. "Could one of you give me a little hand? I'm not sure what to choose."
Soos and Pacifica shared a look. Soos jumped off the chair. "Welp, my turn to leave," he said. "See you later, kid." he winked and left with the tourist. Pacifica watched as he left with a little smile on her face.
"Pacifica! Pacifica!" Gideon ran, calling his sister's name.
Pacifica turned her head to her brother. Gideon bounced forward once he reached her. "You won't believe this!"
