Wren expected his mission to be easy, and to his luck, he wasn't wrong. The Corduroy Shack had barely any good security, except for the cameras that could be seen here and there. But of course this wouldn't be piece of cake, someone was in there. It was a man with a round belly, wearing a green shirt with an Upsidedown Question Mark in it.
"If Wallace was here, he probably could take on this mammoth," William said.
Wren nod. "But Wendy knows best. If she says he's not good for this mission, then he's not good for it." he stated. "We shouldn't try to refute her, she's a Goddess after all."
"Gods should listen a bit more to others," William said.
"Weren't you the one showing off a trait you had that Wallace didn't?" Wren asked.
After a second of pause, William replied: "I wasn't 'showing off', I just used something she said that was of her interest and told her that I had plenty of it."
Wren grimaced. "That's one of the definitions of 'showing off'."
"Okay, okay, fine, let's focus," William looked at the man. "Hopefully we can find a way to sneak through him without him seeing or hearing us."
"Well, we know that we need to get upstairs," Wren said. "He doesn't seem to go up there."
"Which is good," William responded. "But doesn't explain how we'll get past him, we can't pick a fight with him. And if we get caught, he'll throw us out — call the police even — and we'll lose all the respect Wendy has for us."
"I know, I know," Wren closed his eyes and dragged his legs near his chest, resting his forehead on his knees with a frown. "Just let me think."
"We need to think together, Wren," William reminded. "We're a duo."
Wren looked at him. "Yeah," he smiled shortly, although it was hidden by his legs. "The Wonder Duo."
"Hello?"
The two coiled and hid themselves more, Wren carefully peeked out the crevice to see the man walking outside.
"Burglars? Are you hiding in here?" he said, a bit lazily. "Come out, make this easy for all of us."
The tone of his voice made it sound like he wasn't trying at all. Or maybe it was just a bit too calm, he didn't sound afraid or panicked at all. That was a problem, because it meant that either he was too confident or he knew what he was capable of. Wren and William shared a look of panic.
"What do we do?" William asked.
"Calm down, let me think," Wren said, looking at the floor below him. He looked outside, seeing the man head to the door of the shack. He turned to his brother. "How fast can you run and how far can you get?"
William shrugged. "Silently, maybe a bit slower, but I think I can reach the stairs." he replied. "Not go up, though."
"Find a spot to hide there," Wren said. "Run when I shake my hand."
William nod, Wren kept his eye focused on the outside. The man got out of the shack. Wren shook his hand and William left the hiding spot, rushing to the stairs and hiding on the hole behind them when he heard a wooden creak behind him. Wren watched as the man went back inside and walked to the counter, crossing his legs on top of the table and opening a magazine, reading over them. Phew, at least William made it to the other side.
He needed to distract the man to help his brother get upstairs, even if that meant he wouldn't be able to. William was quiet, like a ghost, he could find the Journal on his own. Wren looked at his surroundings and found a coin. This is the stupidest idea I ever had, but here goes nothing. He threw the coin outside to the door's direction. The man turned his head to it and stood from the chair, William didn't wait for him to move to come out and go upstairs. Wren, on the other hand, waited for the man to pass through his hiding spot to get out of hiding and hide where his brother hid. I can't believe that actually worked, Wren thought, as the man took the coin and searched the room he was hiding before. When he found nothing, he went back to the counter, but now he had hawk eyes on his surroundings. But how will I get out now?
