HIS hands reached out to touch my cheek—the one he hit. I closed my eyes and held my breath, praying it would end soon. His fingertips merely brushed my skin, then his touch was gone.
"You can open them now," he muttered, then I felt a small breeze as he walked past me.
I opened them and found the other side of the now closed door. I thought he would be somewhere else in the room but his thick arm unexpectedly wrapped around my stomach.
"All dressed up for me, darling," he murmured sarcastically.
I shuddered and let my arms fall limp, before I went back to try and pry his arm off. Using both hands hadn't helped one bit. Eric only tightened the grasp he had one me.
"You're supposed to be my fiancée, aren't you?" His lips brushed against my ear.
"But it gives you no r—right to touch m—me," I stuttered, eventually giving up on prying his arm off.
But maybe I was wrong all along. Maybe Eric did have every right to do as he pleased with me.
I simply went back to hugging myself. A whimper escaped my lips as he pressed my body to his. All I felt was the heat radiating off of him, which only terrified me more.
"I. .have. .every. .right," Eric murmured, followed by his lips on my neck, softly kissing my chilled skin.
"Stop. ." I whined softly, squirming around.
He yanked me flush to him, coiling his arm more. My breaths came out short and shallow but my main concern was getting him off me.
"Please," I pleaded weakly, the lump in my throat burning.
Eric didn't stop until I started crying. He let me go and I stumbled forwards, grabbing the cool doorknob for an escape. But he jerked me away from it, standing in front of the door as a barrier. I wiped my face and looked up at him. His indignant look made me recoil further away, and I brought my arms around myself again.
"Please, don't let them do this to me. I—I don't. .want you," I choked out.
He let out a breathy laugh, breaking eye contact. "And you think I want you? I can't do this. I have to." He appeared disgusted. "There's nothing worse than getting tied down to someone like you. .a fucking Amity."
His words came like a blow but I was glad he was admitting it all. At least I hadn't been the only one that saw the settlement as a curse or something. But he should've found a better way of expressing his distaste over our situation.
"Is it even allowed?"
He shrugged. "I don't even know what is and isn't allowed, nowadays."
"They can't do this. You're far too old and—and. . ." I didn't know what else to say.
