ERIC'S POV
I watched her curled up figure, the way she was tightly bundled up in the covers. Her hair was all over the place, covering most of her face, but I didn't mind it. All I cared about was having her sound asleep.
She wouldn't have to worry about me constantly scolding her for a while longer. Her fear of whether I would harm her that day wouldn't keep her on high alert just yet. There was still some time for her to enjoy the peacefulness, avoiding any worries of what I'd be capable of doing to her.
I reached out to push back the dark locks covering her face. She slightly frowned in her sleep then her own hand rubbed her cheek. Her hand brushed against mine but she remained sound asleep, tightly curled up. My fingertips ran across her cheek, to where I had left the first mark on her face and where many tears have fallen because of my own doing. Even her father had forewarned me about that, how sensitive she had always been.
"My Penny is very delicate, Eric. It's not the greatest thing to upset her, or constantly reproach her if she does do something wrong. She can be very sensitive and tender-hearted, and it comes down to letting her know what she might have done wrong instead of berating her right away. ."
By saying the things I did the night before was too far. I hadn't only scolded her for being too sensitive, but I also made it sound like I only cared about the sexual pleasure she was able to give me. It was more than just her body; I loved Penelope and who she was, like a fool. Her sensitivity, the way she'd wander off into her own little world, a small smile on her face telling me she was remembering happy memories. The way she would often sing in the shower when she thought I wasn't right outside in our bedroom.
My mother had been the only woman I had ever loved, but my love for Penelope was obviously different. I loved her immensely, beyond my limits of truly describing what it was to have her that I forgot how to act upon that feeling. Loving a girl was never something I had to worry about, that wasn't who I was, but Penelope changed it all.
The Amity girl I first met eight years ago changed my life forever.
It was unimaginable to feel about her the way I did, considering that she had never crossed my mind before the whole marriage. Penelope meant nothing to me, she was just another being among the population of Chicago. Her place was Amity, while mine was Dauntless. We were never meant for each other.
We were too different.
"But I love you," I whispered, gazing down at her.
Her hand moved towards her face again but only to rub her eyes. She blinked tiredly then yawned, her arm stretching above her head. I was taken by surprise when her hand found my arm, clinging on to it tightly. My eyes shifted up and down, trying to figure out what was wrong. She only gasped softly, her tired eyes opening the slightest bit.
