ERIC'S POV
THE first thing I found walking inside the apartment was wrapping paper, tons of it. It was scattered across the living room, on every surface available. Then there was the mouthwatering smell of food. But what surprised me the most, was Penelope. She sat behind the couch, her legs crossed as she cradled more wrapping paper. Her beautiful brown eyes gazed up at me, a look of innocence filling them.
"I'm. .I'm sorry," she breathed, glancing back down.
She immediately dropped the wrapping paper, her fingers softly kneading her knees. It was as if I had caught her doing something she shouldn't have done. But she did nothing wrong.
"What?" I questioned, lightly chuckling.
Penny looked up, her eyes searching my face. Her fingers stopped then she stretched out her legs, pulling down on her dress. I simply couldn't help scanning her body from head to toe, taking in how she looked. Besides looking a bit exhausted, with a few strands of hair stuck to her forehead, she looked completely gorgeous.
Breathtaking.
"I'm sorry," she repeated, a little louder.
I only laughed, meeting her eyes. They looked at me pleadingly but I couldn't figure out why. Had she really done something wrong? What had she done? Did she leave without my permission?
"What are you apologizing for, Penelope?" I demanded, keeping my voice at a reasonable level.
Her eyes widened a bit, and I saw that she was now afraid. She appeared to lose herself in her own thoughts.
Did she really do something?
"Penelope," I called, snapping her out of her thoughts.
"N—No, Eric," she stuttered. "It's just that I didn't mean to open them without you." Her answer was rushed, while motioning around.
I glanced around, seeing that almost all the wedding gifts had been opened, which explained all the wrapping paper. Many objects also surrounded her but Penny only pushed them aside as she climbed to her feet. In an instant, she began fumbling with her fingers, which only meant she was nervous. The sight brought a small smile to my face.
"Why did you open them? Especially now?"
Her eyebrows furrowed and she pursed her lips. I watched as she stopped playing with her fingers then as she laced them together. She brought herself closer, but kept her distance. Then she finally looked up.
"I was bored. Cleaning and cooking wasn't a lot to keep me entertained. I just needed something to keep me busy longer. ."
Cleaning and cooking?
That explained the delightful smell of food.
"Why did you clean and cook? You already know that I take care of the cleaning, and that there's the cafeteria for our meals."
