I impatiently stared out my window, staring across the tree line, then tried looking past to where the entrance to Amity would've been. Papa had informed me that Eric would be paying me a visit. I'd be okay with that in any other circumstance, but we'd be alone again. If Mama or Papa were present, then everything would be fine, despite still being against my engagement.

"We'll be heading out!" Mama called from downstairs.

That finally got my attention and I rushed downstairs. I ran up to Mama and Xavier, taking him into my arms. I walked them out while playfully bouncing Xa.

"He's here," Mama spoke up.

I stopped playing with Xa and looked down through the trees at the left of our house. Surely enough, Eric was marching through the green scenery, a stony look on his face.

"Here, I'll leave now." Mama hurriedly took Xa from my arms, quickly taking the long dirt path that would eventually take her to the Dome.

Mama and Xa were gone by the time Eric was nearing the house. I quickly rushed inside but the left the door open, the screen door being the only thing keeping him out. But the screen door wouldn't prevent him from coming in, so I only rushed upstairs to my room. I only sat on my bed, with my knees pulled to my chest.

"Penelope?"

Eric's voice travelled upstairs and I hugged my knees closer to me. Within seconds, I heard the sound of his heavy footsteps coming up the stairs. He must have taken two at a time, because he was already in the hallway. The door to Xa's room creaked opened then it was closed shut. Then, my own slowly opened up.

"You're in here," he stated sternly.

I kept looking out my window until he stood in front of me. His fingers clasped my chin, tipping it back so that I would meet his eyes. Those blue eyes weren't full of so much hate but he didn't appear too pleased either.

"Why didn't you answer when I called your name?"

I moved my face, losing his touch.

"I didn't hear you," I lied through my teeth.

He smirked. "But you saw me coming."

I flushed and dropped my gaze over my mattress.

"I—I just didn't feel like waiting."

He roughly brought my attention back to him. "You'll have to learn to wait for me, okay?"

I bit down on my lip and nodded. With a satisfactory smile, Eric let my face go and reached into his pocket. He didn't look too pleased handing me the tiny velvet box. But I dreaded even more knowing what would be inside.

"I thought I might get you this. ." he mumbled.

My hand slightly shook as I opened it. What I found inside was a beautiful ring. The silver ring had a large sapphire gem in the middle with smaller diamonds encrusted around it. The gesture felt like it cost Eric too much, and I simply handed it back.
