DAYS LATER
A pounding headache formed as I continued staring down at the multiple albums Mama had given me. My eyes only followed blurs of flowers, decorations, and dresses.
"What do you think?" Mama anxiously asked, taking a sit next to me.
I huffed annoyingly but played it off as a tiresome sigh.
"Everything's beautiful, but I want something simple, not all these flashy things," I answered, shutting all the album's set around me.
"You're father doesn't mind the cost, baby. We have more than enough to have the reception party go on for days." Mama giggled.
"Mama, I'm sure Eric doesn't want a blowout like that either."
She pouted but didn't argue any longer. I pushed the books towards her and pursed my lips. There was no need for some huge party. I just wished to get it out of the way.
"Roses," I began, a faint frown on my face. "Simple, but beautiful decorations." I racked my brain harder. "Out by the fields, facing where the sun sets—"
"What about guests?" she interjected, looking close to bursting from the excitement.
"Whoever would like to attend is welcome," I simply responded.
Mama looked disappointed at hearing that.
"But wouldn't you want certain people to show up? Important people?" she urged on.
I shook my head and propped my chin under my hand.
"Anyone who wants to come, Mama. There's nothing to hide from the others."
Mama's smile grew and she scoot closer to me.
"Three weeks, Penelope. You'll soon be happily married."
I forced a tight smile then stood to get a glass of water. I heard the flipping of the albums as I steadily drank my water, Mama making noises of approval.
"The dress?" she chirped excitedly.
I sighed heavily. "Damien will make it. . .Maybe something to represent my ties to Dauntless."
"We need something that will mold to your figure. Something for Eric's eyes, too."
Mama clapped her hands and rushed to me, hugging me from behind. She was able to rest her chin on my shoulder, squeezing her arms around my stomach.
"Tell me, sweetie. .have you and Eric been together?"
I scoffed. "Mama! Of course not!"
Mama only laughed and hugged me tighter. But I her question left me feeling uncomfortable. If she only knew what Eric had me do and the few inappropriate things he'd done to me.
