DAYS LATER
EIRC'S question went unanswered, and it was mostly because I couldn't figure out how to answer it. His words kept swirling around my head, leaving me unexpectedly stressed. There was so much behind his simple question, but I hadn't been able to piece together my answer. Especially when it pertained to Charlie.
"What would you do if I did kill him?"
I couldn't stop thinking about it when I was by myself, or when I would lay next to Eric, watching him sleep. My fingers tips would trace his youthful features, slowly trailing over his rosy lips. I saw the way a small frown would often make its way over his face, making me wonder what he was dreaming of. Could it have been a nightmare?
And had it been a nightmare, I wondered if it was over what he did to Charlie. But I still had no idea what it was Eric had done. Eric said nothing to me, and I didn't think he would, even if I had answered his initial question.
"Penny, sweetheart, come to bed," Eric called a little loudly, but I knew he didn't intend it that way.
I rushed towards the bathroom door, opening it slowly and peeking out to where Eric laid. He sat up, leaning on one elbow and glancing over at me. I met his eyes but just as quickly looked away, my cheeks growing warm. Eric chuckled softly, knowing exactly why I was so timid about going to bed. I glanced up one more time, smiling softly at him, but still being on edge by his questions from days ago.
My hand reached for the light switch of the bathroom, turning it off then pushing the rest of the door open. One hand smoothed out the silk gown Eric had gifted me with, goosebumps rising with my touch. And Eric continuous gaze made things a little tougher, too.
"You look so beautiful, Penny," Eric disclosed, chuckling softly afterwards. "I could just. .eat you up, sweetheart."
Hearing him say that made me go weak to my knees, and butterflies erupted in my stomach. I quickly rushed from under the doorway, making my way towards my side of the bed. Eric moved closer to me, welcoming me under the covers with him. The warmth of his body immediately engulfed me, but I couldn't yet bring myself to look at him.
Eric placed the palm of his hand under my chin, coaxing me to meet his eyes. When I did, I saw that familiar gleam in his eyes, one he'd thrown my way many times before.
"Why are you being so shy, baby?" Eric asked softly. "I'm only telling you what I'm thinking."
"I'm. .I'm not being shy," I mumbled, pulling my bottom lip in between my teeth.
Eric frowned, abandoning my chin and running his thumb right under my lip. He shook his head and pressed his thumb down.
"You're only going to hurt yourself, Penny. Don't do that."
