ONE WEEK LATER
PENELOPE hadn't stirred when I climbed out of bed, taking her arms off me and bringing the covers up to her chin. I looked over her sleeping figure, my eyes landing on her growing belly. I reached out with my hand, resting it just over her stomach. It wasn't as hard as I'd expected but she was slowly getting there.
I moved my hand around, gently, half-expecting to feel something. A small movement. Instead, Penelope was the one that moved. She stretched her arms over her head, a small groan emitting from her lips.
"What's going on?" she muttered, looking up at me with squinted eyes.
I traced my hand to rest just below her belly button then I spoke quietly.
"Nothing, Penny. I'm just heading to the bathroom."
She tilted her head sideways, a small frown on her tired face. I knew an hour or two of sleep would do her well, but I didn't think she'd go back to sleep. I'd caught her attention, especially with what I was doing.
"Why don't you get another hour of sleep in?"
Like I had expected, she shook her head, her frown growing. She parted her lips before swiftly licking them.
"What are you doing?" she mumbled.
I gazed down to where my hand rested, moving it again to answer her question. She grabbed my arm, squeezing it then trailing her hand down. Her touch was strangely soothing, calming something unknown within me.
"Why hasn't he moved yet?" Penelope asked softly.
"It's going to take time, baby," I whispered. "He still has a lot of growing to do, and there's still time before you can feel him moving."
Penelope's frown slowly faded, a smile taking place instead. She giggled softly, sitting up and grabbing a hold of my chin. Her lips reached out for mine and I quickly crashed mine against hers. Seconds later, she gave my chest a small push.
"Go shower while I make something for us to eat."
"Okay."
I gave her a quick kiss, my hand lingering over her stomach for a moment before I forced myself to pull away. Penelope watched me gather what I needed, that small frown returning. I could see the curiosity in her eyes and I realized what she was thinking.
What I was doing, the affection I was showing the baby had left her a little surprised. And I didn't blame her. I was determined to turn things around for the both of us, welcome the unexpected with a better attitude than before.

"We'll be right next door, so when the time comes we'll come and get you both, okay?"
I nodded, my eyes set behind Max and not on him.
"Take care of yourself, sweetie," Larissa told Penelope before she hugging her quickly.
