PENELOPE'S POV
HE had finally drifted off to sleep, soft snores filling the room. But he still looked pale, the loss of blood being the reason why. Up until then, I understood that Eric was no longer in any danger. I calmly watched over him, wiping away the constant flow of tears falling down my face. No noise came from me. Only Eric's snores and the beeping machines could be heard. Everything had finally returned to a serene state, but on the inside I couldn't have been more unstable.
So much had gone wrong over a period of a couple of hours.
"Maybe you should get some rest."
I jumped at the sound of the man's deep voice.
"Sorry," he quickly uttered.
I closed my eyes for a second, before turning to look at him. The tall man stood by the doorway, a cup of coffee in one hand, while the other held one of those gadgets invented by Erudite. Those things blew my mind but gave me a headache at the mere sight of them.
"No," I finally croaked. "I prefer staying by his side until he wakes up."
"With the heavy medicine they gave him, I could only guess that would take a few hours."
I shook my head, sniffling and wiping away some stray tears. The man grunted, walking further into the room and taking the other side of Eric's bed.
"He'll be pretty irritated knowing you haven't gotten any sleep," the man continued.
"And who might you be to tell me what Eric will disapprove of?" I questioned a bit harshly.
"Well, besides the person that was able to inform you about Eric's state, I'd say someone that has a point."
I crossed my arms across my chest, scoffing quietly enough to keep Eric sleeping. But the man might have had a point, and the medication was good enough to keep Eric sleeping.
"Thank you," I mumbled, "but I'm still staying, no matter what Eric has to say once he wakes up."
He shrugged, then took a drink from his coffee cup.
"Whatever you say—" he stopped abruptly, looking my way with a confused expression. "Penelope, right?"
I nodded and gave him the best smile I could, which might have looked like a bitter grimace.
"I'm Four."
The corners of my lips unexpectedly twitched upwards, a small giggle making past my sealed lips. I glanced his way, catching the solemn look across his face. Despite the way he looked at me, I couldn't hold in the small laugh.
"I'm really sorry," I whispered breathlessly. "It's just I've heard of you before, but I never believed that you actually existed. .and with that name."
