SAME DAY
I didn't know if I could face Charlie, and I meant after getting married. I'd no longer be Penelope Odysseus, I was to be Penelope Agrippa, wife of Dauntless leader, Eric Agrippa. Funny that a simple last name could easily change someone's life. How would mine change?
My mind was still running in circles, trying to make out of what Eric was doing. I had never known a person more confusing than Eric. The man was a complete mystery, which wasn't a great component to how he already was. I thought I figured him out, through the things he'd done, but I was wrong. There was so much more to him, something I was secretly dying to discover.
"Penelope."
I jumped at the sound of my name, dropping the dish I had been scrubbing for the past minute. Luckily, the drop wasn't too high, and it only fell into the sink. I quickly dried my hands off, turning around with a small, tight smile. But it soon dropped when I saw it was Stark.
"Stark," I whispered, immediately turning to look out the kitchen window.
Papa and Eric were having what appeared like a lighthearted conversation, with the exception of Papa throwing his head back, laughing heartedly, while Xa ran after flying insects. Papa looked genuinely happy, losing his weariness for the time that Eric made him laugh. But that still made me uncomfortable. I didn't know if Eric was sucking up to Papa, fooling him like we fooled the rest of Amity. Yes, of course Papa was the master-mind behind our arrangement, but I meant Eric fooling him in the matter that I was supposedly happy.
Nothing would make things worse than Amity and Dauntless knowing that the engaged couple—those bound to bring peace between two factions—were unhappy with each other. Mostly the bride-to-be, because her soon-to-be husband was displaying an abusive side, with a perplexing sweet, caring side, too. Only one question would be asked: how were they supposed to bring peace when the love they were rumored to sharefor a year came crashing down once they married?
There was only one reason as to why Stark was here. Especially during working hours. Stark was never one to put work aside. Only if it was urgent.
"Stark," I started, rushing to where he stood, by the kitchen's doorway. "You can't tell anyone what you know," I half-whispered, dragging him out into the living room then up the stairs.
Stark didn't struggle against my hold, and kept following me, mostly because I was reluctant on releasing him.
"What are you doing here?!" I breathed, pushing him inside my room.
"What's wrong?" he asked, calmly taking a sit on my bed.
I rushed out, stopping at the top of the stairs. The house was silent but I picked up the faint, muffled voices of Papa and Eric. I ran back into my room, leaving the door open in case Eric came in and found us upstairs. There was no need to give Eric the wrong idea, even with Stark's sexual orientation. Something told me Eric doubted Starks preference, probably with how attractive Stark actually was.
