~Zahara~
As soon as the door closes, I huff and hear a chuckle behind me. "I swear, Lennox, you have the WORST timing......always!" Lennox gets closer to me and throws his arm around my shoulder. We head downstairs to get to my father's office.
"Don't be mad at me, Z. It wasn't my idea to meet right now. You know I hate to be a cockblocker.......well, in your case, a puss-blocker." Lennox starts to laugh, and I elbow him in his ribs. "Shit, Z, that hurts." I turn to Lennox and smirk in satisfaction. We walk into my father's office, and he is talking to Simeon, our Beta and Lennox's dad. Lennox and I sit on the couch in the office and wait for our fathers.
"Guys, how did your trip go?" My father looks between Lennox and me, awaiting our report. Lennox launches into the issues that we had to help the pack with and the training that we helped with.
"We have always had a good relationship with the Winter Pack, and we hope that you two can continue that once we pass the torch. Speaking of which," Simeon looks at myself and Lennox, "the ceremony is coming up quick. Are you two ready?" I look at Lennox, and he winks at me.
"We got this dad. No need to worry. We have been training for this for years now and we are both ready to take over. I wish I had my mate by my side, but I know I will have that soon." I think back to the many conversations Lennox and I had growing up about finding our mates. We always said how much we were looking forward to that time and how great it would be. We wondered if we would find them within our pack or if we would have to travel to other packs.
Simeon turns to me. "How is the future......what title will Cory hold?" I often wondered what title Cory would have here. I wouldn't plan to call him Luna or Lune, nor did I plan to ask him to take a back seat to me.
"Funny you should ask. We found......well I found out today that Cory is an Alpha. He should be the Alpha of the Wild Tail Pack, not Laslo."
"You can't be serious, Z! How did that happen?" I launch into the story that dad told us today and everything else I've already learned about my mate. I decide to go ahead and let the Betas know about my issues with Laslo. Neither of them took that very well. As I finish relaying the information, I can feel the tension in the room. No one looks happy. Everyone looks like they are seconds away from shifting and tearing up anyone who crosses their paths.
"What are we going to do?" Lennox has always had my back. I know since we were little that he would be the best Beta anyone could ask for. I never need to ask him anything; he just always knows and is always there.
"I don't really know. Cory will need to decide if he wants to challenge Laslo for what's rightfully his or not. I won't make that choice for him nor will I push him. He is worried about being in charge of a pack and I understand where the fear is coming from. At least we were trained for our positions. Cory has never been trained for anything other than manual labor." I sigh and shake my head. "As far as my issues with Laslo, I don't know. I'm not sure how far he will actually go to get what he says he wants. I have told him repeatedly that I don't want him and I won't choose him. I don't want to tell him about Cory being my mate. We don't know who almost killed him and we don't know if he had a part in those pills that Cory has been taking for years. I can only hope he will give up, but I don't know."
"Currently, I have some other Alphas looking into some information regarding the Wild Tail Pack. I'm trying to get any information that I can so we can take them down. What goes on in that pack is a crime that needs to be addressed. The fact that someone may have murdered Derek and tried to cover it up is another issue. I don't know how long it will take to get some answers, but that's the plan." We all nod at my father. He has a lot of connections, and hopefully, they will come through with the information we need.
"Uh, maybe we should keep this information between us. We don't know who knows who." My dad nods at Lennox. I didn't consider who may have a connection to Cory's pack and what that could mean. As it is, we haven't told anyone where Cory came from. I haven't even formally presented him as my mate. I really need to sit with Cory and figure out how we need to approach all of this. He has healed, and now it's time to make some decisions. I stand up and make my way to the door.
"Cory and I have a lot to discuss. I think we need to make some choices, especially with our ceremony coming up."
"That's a good idea, Bean. You and Cory should talk and figure out what you want to do from here. Once you guys figure things out, let's meet again to make solid plans." I nod to everyone and head out of the room. I'm not sure if Cory left my room or not, and I can't mindlink him yet. Things will be smoother when he shifts for the first time. I head toward my bedroom, where I saw him last.
