~Laslo~

The elders spent the day all over the packhouse. They seemed to have questioned everyone about everything. I haven't had any time to think about my current situation. My mate is pregnant, and that is not good. I need my first child to come from Zahara.

I'm sitting in my office waiting for the elders to discuss their findings. I was hoping I could get them to leave after their night here, but since they spent so long on pack grounds, they decided to stay a second night. I truly need these elders out of here so I can go on about my business.

A knock on my door brings me out of my thoughts. I left my door wide open, trying to get everything moving as fast as possible. I look up, and my mom walks into the room and sits across from me at my desk. "I know you went to see your mate the other night." I look up from my paperwork but say nothing. "I told you to stay away from her while the elders were here. If they were to find out what's going on......." I clear my throat, getting my mother to stop talking.

"What I do or not is my business. I have everything under control so please leave it be." Before my mom can respond, there is another knock at my door. The elders walk in, looking between the two of us. My mom stands up and walks over to stand beside me while the elders take the seats in front of me.

"Are we interrupting?" I believe it was Elder Roberts we asked. I can't even try to tell them apart because I don't really care to.

"Of course you aren't interrupting," my mom responds. "Maybe now you can tell us what you have been investigating." I sigh internally. As badly as I want to know what's going on, there is a way to go about things, and this is probably not it. One of the elders gives a small smile, but I'd imagine there is nothing behind it more than basic politeness.

"Well, we should go ahead and discuss why we are here. Luna Margaret, you may want to take a seat." My mom scoffs, but I get up and direct her to sit in my chair. I stand behind her and wait to see what these two have come up with. "We are here on two accounts. We have gotten accusations from others that held merit and needed to be investigated."

"What accusations have you gotten?" I barely get the question out without the growl.

"This pack has been accused of killing their former Alpha and turning a pack member into a slave before killing them." The breath leaves my body as different realizations come into focus. They are talking about my stepfather and Cory, but how could they even know about them? There should be no evidence to find regarding anyone of those accusations, but one can never be too careful.

"Are you accussing us of killing my loving husband?" Both of the men look at my mother and look at me.

"We have a few people who asked some important questions and some things regarding the incident just don't add up." My mom shoots out of her chair and leans her hands on the desk.

"How dare you accuse us of ending the life of my love! He was everything to me, and I won't have anyone suggesting otherwise." I have to say that she was laying it on a bit thick, but I would never interrupt. Neither elder looks impressed. I decide to take the focus off of my mom.

"What pack member do you think we had a hand in killing?" I already know who they will say, but I need to hear the name.

"Cory Williams. No one has seen him, and we have been told that he was beaten to death." I roll my eyes and sigh.

"I'm not sure why anyone would say that. No one has seen Cory because he ran away. I guess things were getting too tough for him, and he took the easy way out."

"That's interesting since no one has seen him or anyone that looks like him. We have checked with nearby packs as well as human towns. He has not been seen or heard from. If he ran away, how has he not been spotted?"

"I'd imagine he was killed by rogues. He was wolfless, so how would one expect him to survive on his own?" I'm not sure if the elders were buying it, but I will sell it as best as I can.

"We will be taking leave now." The men stand up and head toward the door. I keep my excitement in check because this feels way too simple. "We have two people who will be stationed here to keep an eye out and continue this investigation for us." Damn it! I knew it was too simple. How are we going to function with the elders leaving eyes and ears in their place? I can feel Nero stirring in anger, but I suppress him as much as I can. If I give in to this anger, they will realize that we have something to hide.

They don't wait for a response but walk out of my office. "Well, that was unexpected." I look at my mom and nod. I have to find a way to put the elder's suspicions to rest while finding a way to get Zahara and take care of this unexpected pregnancy. There is too damn much going on right now, and I need to get a handle on it all.

My phone rings, so I pull it out of my pocket. It's my contact that I have keeping an eye on Zahara. I answer the phone and can't believe what I hear on the other end. I get so upset that I crush the phone in my hand and toss the remains across the room. I can feel my claws growing and fur sprouting. "Laslo, you need to calm down. What the hell is the problem?" I close my eyes and take a few deep breaths, trying to get Nero to back down. I try thinking of Nona, her red hair and her green eyes. I can feel myself and Nero calming down with just the thoughts of Nona. I open my eyes and look at my mom.

"Zahara is marked and mated." My mom's eyes get wide.

"Who is she with? You told me that she was fated to Cory and you killed him. Who did she find after that?"

"I don't know. I didn't ask." I pick up my office phone and dial the number I know by heart. They pick up on the second ring. "Who the hell is she mated to? WELL FUCKING FIND OUT! You have 24 hours to tell me!" I slam the phone on the receiver, subsequently crushing it to pieces. "FUCK! This was not the plan. First the baby and now this." I'm pacing back and forth in my office, trying to figure out how everything went off of the rails.

"Baby? What baby?" I stop pacing and turn my back on my mom. I didn't mean to say that out loud, but I'm stressed the fuck out. "Laslo, tell me you didn't. Tell me you didn't get your mate pregnant!" I don't respond, nor do I turn around. "You can't have your heir be from Nona! How will your heir be strong? Your first child should be from Zahara."

"DON'T YOU THINK I KNOW THAT?!" I spin around and face my mother. "I know I fucked up, I don't need you to tell me that." I slump in my chair and lay my head back. "I don't know how to fix this." I feel my mom pat my arm.

"I will help you. I will help you get rid of the baby. You focus on finding out who Zahara marked and how to get her here." My mom wraps her arms around me and puts my head on her chest. I close my eyes and take deep breaths. "Mom will always help you."
