It was a Thursday morning when he came into the store for the third time. Gyuri was working alone as it usually wasn't too busy around this hour. The store was empty as everyone who bought coffee was on their way to work and didn't have time to sit down. Besides, it was already after 9 so most people had already started their own shifts.
She had her back turned to the entrance but turned around when she heard the door open and saw a guy walk in. She recognized his eyes peeking from above his mask right away. He greeted her and walked over. She smiled at Mark softly, moving towards the counter to take his order.
"I'll have 4 iced americano's, 3 frappucino's, and 2 café latte's please," he said, taking out his card and handing it to Gyuri to pay. She nodded and entered his order, swiping his card to pay before telling him it would be done soon. She handed him back the card and bowed slightly. He nodded and thanked her before taking place by a table where he took out his phone to pass the time.
Gyuri went on to make the coffees, carefully handling the big coffee machines and hot liquids. She glanced over her shoulder at the boy sitting in the store. She still found it crazy to see him in person again, and even crazier that he didn't recognize her. She couldn't blame him at all, but it was kind of funny to her. When he smiled at something on his phone, she smiled to herself as his eyes still had the same light in them as they did as a kid.
She placed lids on all of the cups before placing them in trays and putting those in bags. Mark noticed she was almost done and walked over to the counter, ready to take the bags from her. She smiled politely, handing over his order. Before he turned away, Gyuri felt a sudden burst of confidence washing over her and she knew she had to take this opportunity in case she didn't see him again, so she spoke up.
"So, Mark," she began in English, taking the boy by surprise as he looked up. "Do you really not recognize me or are you just ignoring your childhood best friend?"
She watched as his eyes widened ever so slightly as he tried to make sense of the situation and started to put the puzzle pieces together. His face changed from confusion to shock and as the realization hit of who was standing in front of him.
"Wait- what? No way-," he stuttered, not believing his eyes. He inspected her face for a few seconds, making sure he was right.
"Kenzie?"
She smiled as the, to her, unfamiliar sounding name fell from his lips in a way that made it feel so familiar, so normal. Just by hearing her english name fall from his lips, she had a nostalgic feeling rush over her that reminded her of home. She hadn't had anybody call her that in a long time, but it was nice.
"Hi Mark," she said simply as she enjoyed the amusing sight of his shocked face.
"Holy shit- what? Yo, this is- woah," he breathed, putting his bags down and running a hand through his hair. He looked her up and down and shook his head in disbelief, a smile slowly creeping onto his face. He looked around, scanning the store quickly for other people before rushing around the counter.
