*Firehouse 51: Common Room*
"Ana, Chief, I see you two have your coats on." Kelly observed from the coffee pot as he spotted them heading towards the Apparatus Floor.
It was said more jokingly towards the brunette, though, since she pretty much always had her jacket on.
"Yeah, we're running morning drills at a few other houses in the district." The older man explained, stopping as the younger walked over.
"Okay, well, so you know, I'm busting out the Weber grill today. Cooking up some brisket for lunch." The Lieutenant smirked.
"Oh, are you now?" Ana grinned.
"Yeah, six pounds of point cut." He winked.
"You know, another chief, he sent me a video about how to make Texas-style rub." Chief recalled.
"Oh, yeah?" Kelly's eyebrows shot up in surprise.
"Black pepper, chili powder, cumin." The older man listed, making the younger let out a small laugh. "Tell you what, why don't we swing by the store on our circuit and we will be back before lunch." He offered, glancing down at Ana who just nodded happily in reply.
"I won't say no to that." The Lieutenant chuckled.
"Good." Chief smiled, turning to the door.
He pushed it open and let the brunette go first before stepping through himself.
*Vince's Mart & Bakery: A Few Hours Later*
Chief and Ana walked in and immediately made their way towards the spice aisle.
"Okay." He murmured, looking over all the different bottles. "Black pepper, Cumin. . ."
The brunette suddenly pointed up at a bottle just out of her reach. The older man smiled down at her in thanks and went to grab it when the sound of screeching tires suddenly reached their ears. It was followed by shattering glass and gunshots ringing through the air.
The two firefighters cautiously peeked out from the shelves to see that a young, African American man had crashed a red van into the store and was currently firing bullets back out at the police. Ana instinctively went for her own gun only to remember that it was back at the Firehouse stowed away in her locker. The shooter backed up deeper into the store, where he now seemed to realize that there were other people with him.
"HEY! Everyone, get up here now! Get on the ground! NOW!" The man shouted, waving his weapon around wildly and forcing all the customers to do as they were told. "Move it! Up front! RIGHT HERE! Move it! If any of you come up on me, I will END you! DO YOU HEAR ME?!"
Ana flinched back into Chief and silently cursed her sensitivity to loud voices. This wasn't the time nor place for her to be scared senseless. The older man gently squeezed one of her arms and moved in front of her just in time to see/hear one of the employees try to speak.
"Sir, you should-"
The shooter silenced him with a guttural scream that had Ana flinching and cursing herself a second time.
"Shut up and sit yo ass down! Open your mouth again and you're first." He hissed, moving over to the broken doors. "Hey! I have hostages! Don't come closer or it's gonna be a bloodbath in here! I mean it! Get back from this store or I'm gonna kill every last one 'em!"
