IT WAS saturday, the day of scotty's barbecue.
all of the sandlot boys were coming. me, scotty, benny & isaac we're walking to scotty's backyard. as soon as we got to his driveway, i could smell hamburgers and hotdogs.

isaac & benny were talking, and i was just following them. the past few days, i've become closer with all of the sandlot boys. some of them even said i was the coolest girl on the planet— aside from wendy peffercorn.(according to squints)

once we entered the backyard, i noticed some of my other cousins were here too. my mom would be coming later since she got off of work at 4:30.

"hey, im gonna go talk to that girl over there. i'll be right back" isaac said. he was referring to a girl with blonde hair, sitting with who i assume was her parents. she was pretty from the looks of it.

after the sandlot boys got here, we all sat at a table, eating and talking about random things.
scotty was sitting next to me, and benny was sitting across from me. isaac was still talking to the girl— who scotty said was the neighbor.

"hey ally, have you ever kissed someone?" yeah-yeah broke in, causing everyone at the table to go silent and wait for my response.

"uh. . . no, i haven't" i responded.

"that's weird. since your so pretty y'know, i would expect that someone has kissed you already"

i nodded. my cheeks burned up a little bit, but the sky was getting darker and i prayed no one noticed.

"what about ryan? i thought you guys kissed" scotty asked.

"no, he was just my boyfriend" i responded. all the boys stared, so i looked down.

"well, i guess i'm the only one who has kissed before" squints said, plopping a fry into his mouth.

"you pretend to drown so she would give you mouth to mouth!"

at 6:00, most of the boys had to go home so we were walking to our house. benny was with me & scotty, and isaac decided to stay a little longer.

"okay, i'll see you guys tomorrow" scotty waved. me and benny said goodbye, then it was just the two of us.

"i still can't believe you haven't kissed anyone. like honestly, you really pretty so i find it hard to believe you haven't" he said, glancing over at me. the sky was a deep blue— which i appreciated. my cheeks were most likely tinted pink.

"yeah, thank you. but you haven't kissed anyone either? squints said he was the only one in the group, well if that kiss even counted"

he chuckled. looking down at the ground. we had stopped walking, just standing at my driveway.

"yeah, i haven't. i just don't have time for girls, y'know? i wanna focus on baseball first" he shrugged, a small grin plastered on his face.

i know i shouldn't of been bothered by what he said, but it did. i tried to not make it noticeable, but surprisingly it ruined my mood. it's not like a had a crush on him— since i've only known him for 6 days, but it still bothered me.

"oh. well, i should go now. my mom is probably waiting for me" i said, keeping my eyes on the ground.

"okay, i'll see you tomorrow" he spoke, turning away and heading for his home. i sat there, watching him walk inside. after he was gone, i turned and walked into my house.

my mom was sitting on the couch, watching a show. i walked in without saying anything and sat down next to her.

"you okay?" she asked, sitting up.

"yeah, i'm alright" i smiled, but it ended up coming out as more of a whisper.

"tell me what happened" she said, placing her hand on my shoulder. she always knew what was wrong. she could read me like a book.

"well . . . you know benny, the boy who plays at the sandlot?" she nodded.

"well, we were walking to the house and at the barbecue one of the boys asked me if i had kissed anyone. and of course i said no, because i haven't. but benny mentioned it when we were walking, and he said he couldn't believe it because i was pretty. i'm happy he said that, but then i asked him if he has, and he said he doesn't have time for girls" i continued, realizing i sounded dumb.

"sounds to me like you have a crush" she chuckled, smiling at me. all i could do was smile back. we both sat in a comfortable silence after that, turning our attention to the tv.

after about 30 minutes, the door opened and isaac came in with a smile on his face. before he could go to his room, i followed him.

"soooo..." i smirked, crossing my arms over my chest.

"no. nothing happened. i'm still with carmen" he rolled his eyes, walking to his room.

i followed him and closed the door behind me.
"cmon now, carmen is ugly, rude, a snob, and 10,000 miles away. now that blondie is right here! and she looks like a model" i explained, sitting down on the corner of his bed.

he sighed and sat down. "i know ally. but i cant just end things with carmen out of nowhere, i still love her" he said. i rolled my eyes.

"whatever dude. just know i tried" i said, getting up and walking out of the room.

i ended up saying goodnight to my mom and heading upstairs to take a shower. i didn't get to before we left to the barbecue, since i had just came back from the sandlot and had little time.

during the shower, i had thought about benny's words. i had no other explanation for why it bothered me so much— other than what mom said. she was right.
