I WAS AT first base, ready to run to second. it had been a couple weeks after the barbecue, and benny's words from that day still stuck with me. it sucked that my feelings for him grew stronger, but i couldn't control them.

as soon as i heard the crack of the bat, i took off running. timmy had hit a homer. as soon as i hit home plate, benny was congratulating me with a high five. i smiled at him the whole time, and he smiled back.

we played until 3:40, since everyday i had to be home by 4. we all sat at the dugout, cooling down. tomorrow was supposed to be one of the hottest days this year— 119 degrees. we all agreed to go to the pool.

benny walked over and sat next to me, a water bottle in his hands.

"here" he said, holding out the water bottle. i took it and smiled. everyday he would walk over, give me a water bottle, and talk about 'how good i did' that day.

"thanks" i said, my eyes lingering on his face. the way he was sitting, the sun had shone perfectly on his eyes. they resembled honey— and honestly it was beautiful.

"is there something on my face?" he asked, cutting me from my thoughts. i quickly set my gaze on the floor. i didn't realize i was staring.

"oh, no. sorry" i spoke quietly, my cheeks growing warmer. scotty must've noticed, because i heard him chuckle.

benny just smiled. he didn't say anything, but i could tell he knew. because of the embarrassment, i buried face with my hands.

once i made it home, i hurried upstairs and jumped onto my bed. i ignored benny the whole way home. i could tell scotty knew what was up— but he didn't say anything.

a knock had cut me off from my thoughts. i thought it was issac at first— but he usually just barged into my room without knocking. my mom was at work, so it couldn't of been her.

"come in!" i yelled, still sitting on the bed. i hadn't changed yet, i just sat there thinking about how i was gonna have to face benny sooner or later.

the door opened, and there stood scotty. he had a package of oreos in his hand— my favorite. i smiled at him as he closed the door.

"what's this for?" i asked him. he plopped the oreos on my lap and sat down next to me.

"they're your favorite, right?"

"well yes, but why did you get them?"

"because, i knew what happened at the sandlot. and honestly you should be happy. he smiled at you"

"but it's so embarrassing scotty! he probably thinks i'm head over heels for him and i've only known him for three weeks!" i said, burying my face with the blanket.

he shrugged. "maybe he's head over heels for you too"

i rolled my eyes playfully. "i didn't say i was you idiot"

he laughed and the rest of the day consisted of talking and eating oreos.
