During year thirteen, Draco and Harry broke up, deciding it would be best for their mental health. They decided they needed to heal alone, before they could focus on anyone else. It was a joint decision.
"I don't want to lose you." Draco whispered.
"Draco, you won't lose me. We'll still be friends, and it'll be like nothing changed. The only difference our relationship really had was that we slept together. Tell me, love, are you in the right state to share your body with me?"
Draco sighed, shaking his head. "We'll still have each other?"
"We will."
And they did. They continued their friendship like nothing changed, and with the support of their friends, they healed. By graduation, things were really looking up.
Once they moved out, Harry decided he would live alone. He did adore the idea of living with Draco and having a domestic relationship, but he needed to get better, properly, before doing that.
In the time they were apart, the two of them never moved on. They didn't go to the same universities but lived close lives regardless, still not together.
Harry found a beautiful two-bedroom house, one floor, with an open plan and gorgeous garden. It was spacious, modern, and perfect for him. Yes, living alone was scary, but he had Hermione and Ron over so much that it felt like they lived there too.
Working everyday, going to school and hanging out with people gave him a good schedule and made his life feel complete. Almost.
Draco had found himself stuck at Malfoy Manor. It was like living alone regardless, and didn't deem it necessary to move out yet. He'd move in with Harry, and only Harry.
He got a job too, despite not needing the money. With the trust fund Lucius had for him, he'd never need to work, but he wanted to. It gave him purpose. Without it, his life was too free, and that gave him freedom to slip back into his most unhealthy habit.
He went to medical school for five years, straight after sixth form. His devotion to helping others made him feel better about the shitty life he lived before meeting Harry. Eventually, he became a doctor, and wanted to further his skill and become a surgeon one day.
At the age of twenty-one, he stopped seeing his therapist. It was a hard parting, but Etheria deemed him fit to live his life without help anymore. He was always allowed back, they both knew that, but he didn't want to.
He'd have stopped sooner had he not attempted one more time. That was at the start of uni, though, when everything got a bit much. But with time, he healed. And he'd be healed for the rest of his life.
Healed independence felt beautiful.
Three attempts later, when Harry was twenty-three, he was finally clear from all the help he had, and was free. He was healed, and he was ready to share his life with other people again. He had a job he decided was perfect for him, as a self-defence worker.
