Schooling In Love

"Edmund?"

"Hm?" He asks, biting off a piece of his toast. He tilts his head at his older brother and sister who glance between each other unsure of what to say next. He swallows prematurely, his eyes shifting between the two. "Yeah?" He asks, hoping it will spur them to say something.

"Edmund, we know this is your day off," Peter begins, stopping when Edmund groans, leaning back in his chair.

"You're gonna make me do something, aren't you?" He asks, running a hand through his hair. He gives his sister a pleading look, only for it to dissolve when she nods slowly.

"Lucy is scared to meet her new tutor and I would go with her, but Peter and I are going to be in a meeting all day discussing trade routes. It would mean the world to us,"

"And to Lucy," Peter butts in, to which Susan nods again.

"If you would go with her to her lesson. It's only an hour or so and then you can have the rest of the day." Susan explains, hoping that Peter's inclusion of how much it would mean to their youngest sister would prick at Edmund's heart. Which it does.

"Fine," Edmund mumbles. "But you better figure out some excellent trade routes." With that, he pushes his chair back and walks briskly from the room, having seen the amused - and relieved - smiles on Peter and Susan's faces.

He mumbles under his breath as he walks down the hallway, grumbling. He knows he should have a better attitude. That after all his siblings have done for him this is the least he can do and, really, what was he going to do anyway? Ride through the woods alone (something Peter has told him not to do on multiple occasions)? Play chess by himself? Have a picnic by himself? He would have been utterly alone today if not for his siblings' request.

Yet, he is still scowling as he turns the corner, running right into someone who lets out a soft "oh dear!" as their books scatter to the floor.

"King Edmund!" The voice gasps. "May I offer my sincere apologies!" Edmund looks up, his eyes widening when he sees who he just bumped into.

She's beautiful. Of course, he can only see the top of her head, but that's enough to know.

"No apologies needed, my lady, please stand," the girl looks up at him as she straightens from her curtsy and Edmund is taken aback once again.

Her eyes shine as a delicate smile lights up her face. Edmund suddenly finds his own eyes gliding over every feature, trying to drink in everything before she looks away. Which she does- all too soon in Edmund's eyes. He finds himself bending down when she does, picking up the books that had scattered against the marble floor.

"Please, your majesty, there's no need for you to pick up after me." Her voice lands so delicately on his ears he almost drops the books again.

Edmund shakes his head. "It was my fault too. I wasn't looking where I was going,"

"But," she stops when Edmund holds up a finger.

"Don't try to excuse me because I'm a King. If you want to do anything let me make it up to you," he reaches towards her, wanting to take the books from her.

"No need, Sire, I've got it. I don't want to hold you up from getting wherever you need to be. Queen Lucy's chambers are just down this hallway."

Edmund glances over his shoulder, realizing that he'd walked right past his sister's room. "Why yes, yes it is. Actually Lucy's room was where I was headed." Edmund ignores her questioning look as he gathers the books from her hand.
