Julia was supposed to be at the court today for a re-trial of the case. Julia and her family couldn't believe why they were retracting all the progress they had made. The man deserved to be in jail for years for attempted murder, and a restraining order would not just cut it. She had felt restless all morning and decided last minute it wouldn't be great to bring back the memories of that day. Julia was not ready to face him yet, so she let her parents go instead while she waited in the car with her brother. She tried her best to forget it, but it always lingered in her mind.

Her mother sat in the courtroom, looking the scumbag straight in the eyes, and started her testimony, "I'm here on behalf of my daughter, Julia. On April 6, 2021 I woke up around 8 am because I was so excited that my daughter would come home and visit us after a long time away from college. We had agreed to meet at our son's football game. She arrived on time despite my husband and I being a little concerned. My husband offered to buy her a drink, but she defensively and responsibly declined my husband's offer because she was driving. Because after the game, we planned to spend some quality time together. She left to chat to her former boyfriend during halftime and didn't come back. When 20 minutes passed and the game was resumed. I started to wonder where she was. I was about to text her when my son ran up to us, telling us the worst news any parent could ever hear."

She took a deep breath and fell silent for a moment, a tear streaming down her cheek as she continued, "Julia has always been a cheerful and outgoing child. I raised my children to be self-assured and strong. My child went from being the most joyful kid to requiring a therapist, taking anxiety medications, experiencing panic attacks, suffering from PTSD depression, and being unable to do simple tasks such as grocery shopping alone. So tell me how, your honor, I can let that man walk out of here without any consequences. He destroyed the child I'd been caring for 20 years. I miss having that little funny girl by my side. How can I?"

The longer Julia sat in the car, the more she felt it necessary to go inside and ensure that he got what he deserved while also proving her strength. She didn't want to give him the impression that he had won. The man who turned her life upside down, and not in a good way. She jumped out of the car quickly, with Gavi close behind.

"What are you up to?" Pablo inquired.

"I'm going inside! He's not going to win this fight " She spoke quickly and heavily. Pablo began to smile, feeling proud of his sister. When she opened the door to the courtroom, her lawyer stood up, surprised.

"Your honor, if you may, I would like to call Julia Soler up to the stand," the lawyer said quickly.

The judge nodded and let her go. She approached the stand, and her mouth dried up as she got closer. As she remembered that day, tears started to fall down her cheeks. She had been trying to forget about that day. It felt like all her feelings are hitting her at once. She had nightmares of that day. A guilty feeling that she was alive and putting her family through so much. It's not the guilt anybody should bear.

"..all the time, you make me feel guilty. But it was your fault, and you must now bear the consequences" Julia finished her sentence. He didn't look like he cared about her words. He didn't even look at her. Four hours later, they all sat in silence around the courtroom as the jury returned and said, "On April 6, 2021, we, the jury, convict Juan Escobar of attempted murder. We are sentencing Mr. Escobar 10 years in prison."

The officials approached him, and he began yelling as tears strolled down his cheeks. Julia hugged her parents and Gavi, relieved. She hadn't realized how tired she was until she got in the car, leaned her head against the window and drifted off.
