"The best of all sports for this purpose are those which follow the Macedonian rather than the Greek model: big-game hunting, mountaineering, the chase with horse and hound, all wilderness life with all its keen, hardy pleasures. The hunter and mountaineer lead healthier lives in time of need they would make better soldiers than the trained athlete."
--Theodore Roosevelt "Professionalism in Sports"
Salt Lake City was located at the foot of a long mountain ridge from Thurston Peak to Twin Peaks.
The Argo was parked at the station and the main crew was having a strategy meeting on the command car. Captain Harris, Roberts, Pete Stryker, Ben Daniels, Bat Masterson, Pat Garrett and Lieutenant Colonel Shelby from B Company, 3rd Cavalry Regiment. Vice President Theodore Roosevelt was absent. He went out to tell Captain Harris that he had something important to do. Harris believed he had earned the Vice President's trust. Roberts asked Miss Craig what his business was. "Fishing," she replied. (The Great Salt Lake was too salty and had few fish, so he probably went to the freshwater Utah Lake or the Provo River).
"We managed to get the railroad and telegraph lines up to Elko," said Colonel Shelby. "Towns further west, for example, Battle Mountain, Winnemucca, Humboldt City, and Reno, are still untouched."
Harris agreed. "Please continue to restore the tracks and telegraph network. Is there any problem?"
"Yes. There is a bronze giant in front of Battle Mountain—"
"Giant?"
"To be exact, it's a colossus. A huge bronze statue. It's wearing armor like a Spartan soldier."
"If you want to get rid of it, our team will help," said Pat Garrett. Lieutenant Colonel Shelby looked annoyed with his cavalry pride. However, he could not refuse and accepted the offer.
"What do we do?" asked Bat Masterson.
"There are two missions. One is gathering information west of Elko. A survey of the water, fuel, and food needed for the Argo. If we can't get them there, we'll have to take them. The second is reconnaissance of the Sierra Nevada mountains. It's already a harsh natural environment, and we have to investigate whether there are any further obstacles."
Bat Masterson and Ben Daniels discussed which mission to take on. As a result, it was decided that Bat would be in charge of Reno, and Ben would be in charge of the Sierra Nevada.
After the meeting ended, Harris, Roberts, and Stryker remained in the Argo command car.
Harris said to Roberts.
"As soon as the Vice President returns, we will be leaving. All right. everyone, get on standby."
