Grim was perplexed by their reactions while Jack grew angered.

"What the hell is so damn funny?! It's true!"

Once Ace got a hold of himself he explained.

"Vampires haven't existed in over 800 years! They were killed off by the Red Queen right before she took the throne!"

Jack frowned at this.

"That's what they want you to think..." he said under his breath.

"Maybe it's just some rogue wizards?" Deuce suggested. "There are a lot of people who didn't graduate from Night Raven Academy and have had huge grudges against the school."

"But if that's the case how come our charms warded off their powers?!" Grim pointed out.

Ace shrugged.

"Dark magic exists, doesn't it?"

"You're being too naive," Jack spoke with an irritated sigh.

"Human-- or hell, magic from normal folk don't just disappear from the power of blessed charms. Most anti-magic charms have to be used for specific spells in the first place. For those charms to have such an effect it had to be cast by a demon!"

"...I still don't think vampires were the ones behind this. It makes no sense! That mystical mumbo-jumbo got you paranoid."

"Well believe what ya wanna! And if you find yourself getting bitten or someone you care about going missing, don't blame me!"

"What was that?!" Ace stood up, clearly angered.

"Both of you calm down," you said as you stood between them.

Ace looked at you with indignation.

"He started it, Y/n! He's the one spouting all this bullshit without any proof!"

Jack shook his head but kept silent.

Grim walked up to Ace.

"Well, what else could it be?"

"Easy! It's like Deuce said: someone is up to some really shady shit with dark magic and is trying to target us!"

"Okay, hotshot," Jack began, "why are they only targeting Grim and Y/n then?"

Ace's face reddened.

"Obviously because Y/n's the only one who can't use magic! And let's face it, Grim's not strong enough on his own-"

"Hey! Am too!"

"Not! Now!!"

Growing angered, he cut himself off and pointed a finger at him.

"What about you, huh?! You claim vampires are after Y/n and Grim, huh? I want proof!"

"C'mon, Ace," Deuce began, "be cool-"

"Shut! Up!"

Deuce glared at him.

"Hey, don't take it out on me just because you're mad at Jack!"

"Maybe I won't if you butt out of it!"

Before Deuce could shoot back Jack took out his phone and showed photos of the bodies of people who had been found by the police at various crime scenes; their faces had been blurred while any serious bodily injuries were heavily censored.

"My dad works as a detective, so he's always sharing stuff with me about cases. Of course, these photos aren't anything you can't find already.

"As you can see, every single one of 'em has two puncture wounds somewhere, be it their leg or neck or wherever. How's that for proof?"

"You're insane! You're insane and I'm leaving!"

Ace stormed out with Deuce quickly trailing behind him.

"Hey, uh, Y/n? We'll check on you guys again tomorrow, okay?"

After that, he shot a look at Ace and closed the door.

Jack breathed a heavy sigh, calming down.

"I'll keep an eye on him too. I'll make sure he doesn't do anything stupid. Make sure not to take that talisman off again, got it?"

Then, quickly closing the door, he went out.

Grim sighed a similar sigh like Jack's.

"Gee, it's really gotten serious, huh?"

He then wandered off, leaving you to your thoughts.

What did you learn today? That you shouldn't underestimate the advice of your friends or the unseen dark force in pursuit of you.

But why did they want you? Was it a vampire as Jack said, or was it a rogue sorcerer out for vengeance?

As you lay there in your bed with your amulet around your neck, Gwendolyn's face popped up in your head.

Though I would hope otherwise, your friend might not be so lucky should the fog reappear again.

Jack's words filled your head and a worry crept from the back of your mind:

Were she and her family safe?

As long as she was wearing the talisman, you were confident Gwen would be safe, but if she took it off-or worse, lost it-the incident from last night might have happened to her if it hadn't already-and her cousin, who was left defenseless, would become an even easier target.

How did it get like this?

And was there any way to stop it?

Could you stop it?

You couldn't bare the thought of it.

Maybe it'll be better tomorrow.

The next day you got a knock at the door.

You looked through the peephole and saw Gwendolyn's grinning face holding a big tray covered in aluminum foil.

You quickly opened it and greeted her.

"Hey!"

You were happy she was here but you wondered how she learned where you lived.

"Oh, I asked some people," she said casually.

"I've always wanted to pay you back for the times you always gave me stuff like the blazer and the charm thingy!"

She set the large tray of nice smells on the table.

"And here I came!"

She then grew sheepish.

"Sorry for not calling before the visit."

You smiled.

"Hey, don't worry, you're always welcome!"

Grim stretched his hind legs as he peeked from the corner.

"Huh? What's that racket-"

He sniffed the room.

"Ooh! Something smells sweet! Hey is that Gwen?!"
