He looked in their direction and lowered his ears, laughing nervously.
"Oops, got carried away a little?"
Trying to retain your anger, you just shook your head.
The maid however simply laughed at your friend's actions.
"Such a lively, cute little familiar. I'm sure days with him are exciting!"
"More like nerve-wracking," you grumbled.
Grim seemed to take exception to this.
"Hey!" he whined as he set his plate on the table.
"What's your name?" The maid asked with a smile.
"I'm Y/n, and, well, you've met Grim."
"I said I was sorry."
After a bit of guilt tripping you with those big blue eyes, you relented and patted his head.
"I get it."
The maid nodded.
"I'm Adel. I've lived here my whole life but my duties as a maid are fairly recent. I'll gladly show you around the halls after our breakfast."
You returned her smile.
"Sounds like a plan."
Since being here the only person you could rely on and talk to was Grim so it felt nice to be able to talk to another human for once.
Not only that but you also had new questions, questions about this place and how things came to be.
*******
"Draconia Manor is kind of like a hierarchy tower," she explained as you, her and Grim walked down the hall, "the servants and guests stay on the first floor, while the low ranking vampires and high ranking guests are on the second. The third and higher floors are for the more powerful vampires. We have 8 floors in total."
Thinking back, you realized that Malleus stayed on the first floor when you and him met.
"If Malleus is the owner of this mansion, why does he stay on the first floor?"
She jumped at his name.
"Please be careful when addressing our house Lord," Adel looked around, "even though you're a Child of Eden, you must only address him as His Highness unless he allows it directly. You wouldn't want the attendants and other vampires catching you, would you?"
You nodded.
Grim grumbled. "Man who cares about all of that? I'm still hungry!"
You shook your head, ignoring him.
"You're right."
She smiled. "His Highness actually has two rooms, though the one in the lowest end is his study, where he usually likes to sleep when guests are involved.
"Seeming as I'm just a maid, I don't have access to the higher floors, though if I were to be honest..."
She leaned in close, "I would rather not go there at all."
"Huh? Why not?" Grim asked.
"When a vampire summons a human servant to their room, they can do whatever they want to them. That's why staying uninteresting is key."
Grim let out a surprised yell while your face paled.
"B-but you shouldn't have much trouble!" She backpedaled, "you're an honored guest so they wouldn't dare pull that with you."
You squirmed involuntarily, thinking back to that moment with Sebek and Lilia, not so sure if that applied to you.
After you outright refused Malleus' invitation, and already on Sebek's hate list, you were sure something else bad would happen.
You looked to see a large painting of a woman with snow white hair and light blue eyes, her dull grey horns peeking out of her head as she sat in front of a window that displayed a wintery forest.
Her blue and white dress and sweet smile gave her an almost angelic look.
"Who's that?" You asked.
"Oh that was Lady Annabelle Ashenwood. She was the same rank as Lord Vanrouge."
"Was?" You parroted.
Adel nodded again, her expression solemn.
"She's been deceased for many, many years, though I don't know the details. Only things I knew are from my great-grandparents, who heard it from their great-grandparents."
She smiled.
"To meet them, I'll have to take you to our lodging area-"
She stopped, her cheerful disposition dropping entirely.
Confused, you followed her gaze and paled as white as her at the sight.
There he was, Sebek Zigvolt and another male vampire you didn't recognize in front of the three of you.
He was wearing the most evil grin.
"We meet again, Human," he sneered.
"Again?" Grim cocked his head curiously.
He gave Adel a look and she ran out of there like a frightened mouse.
Apart from Grim, you were alone, and defenseless.
Sebek chuckled.
"Still as pathetic as ever. Dumont, seize that little vermin for me," he spoke to the other vampire, keeping his gaze on you.
Grim glared up at him.
"Who you callin' a vermin, you rat-haired freak!"
Dumont made a face.
"Ugh, not only is it an ugly little thing, it's got a mouth! What should I do with it, Sir Zigvolt?"
"Do what you like." He answered robotically.
As Dumont went to pick it up, Grim went into a fighting stance, ready to light him on fire.
"Get close to me and you'll be char-grilled, suckers!"
You panicked, as you knew they were gonna hurt Grim; even with his training his magic didn't compare to these vampires.
Grim was preparing for a fire breath but out of nowhere a large green thunderbolt struck Grim, turning him into an unrecognizable black mass, his tail and parts of his hair raising smoke as the bolt disappeared just as quickly.
In the blink of an eye, Grim resembled a lump of coal.
"Grimmy!" You began to make your way towards him but Sebek's grip on your arm was like cold iron, yanking you away as you looked helplessly at your friend's terrible state.
Despite your desperate pleas, Grim was unresponsive, and your mind raced as your face heated up from your tears.
Dumont swore, his fear and shock almost on the level of yours.
"Master Sebek, couldn't you have given me a heads up before you conducted your spell?!" He almost yelled, outrage in his voice.
"Dumont, talk back to me again and I shall do to you what I just did to that pipsqueak just now. Hurry up and dispose of him," he glowered, to which Dumont wordlessly obeyed, the color in his face fading.
