Your POV:

You were hanging out at the Queendom's Grande Mall Plaza with Deuce, Ace, and Grim, Grim taking no time to finish off the big pretzel you got him a while ago from the food vendors.

Deuce groaned at his piggishness.

"Could you tone down the weird sounds? It sounds gross as hell when you eat."

"Yeah," Ace chimed in with a smile, "Just lookin' at you is enough to give me heartburn."

"Shaddap!" Grim spat through bites.

You tuned out their argument as you fiddled with the gem of your talisman, thinking about your time with Gwendolyn and Jack.

You wondered how they were doing.

Since the blowout between Ace and Jack, you haven't seen him outside the shop, and when you did, he was always in a hurry these days.

As for Gwendolyn...

You tried to call her a few days after she fixed the incident with the car but she wasn't picking up.

You dropped it until today before you went into the mall, but she still didn't answer.

A small clump of anxiety in your stomach formed, the worry that something happened to peek its way into the back of your mind--

"Y/n?"

The voice of your friends broke you away from your thoughts.

The confusion must've been evident on your face because Ace waved his hand in front of your eyes.

"Yo! Earth to Y/n! You alright over there?"

"What is it?" You asked finally.
"Well, we were wondering what you wanted to eat?"

I'd better not make them worry, you thought, I'll just put up a front.

"Uh, why don't we get..."

As soon as you got home you went to your room and pressed Gwendolyn's profile in your contacts.

Once the screen lit up, you waited for the dial tone to stop.

Beep.

Beep.

Beep.

Beep.

The monotonous beeps seemed to last for eternity.

Your brows twinned as a twinge of worry formed in your gut.

Please, you pleaded to yourself. Don't blow me off, Gwen.

You felt that pit in your stomach grow.

Maybe something happened to her?

You thought about the events that had happened to you ever since you met Gwen and got the talismans from Jack.

She did claim to be having bad dreams like you before she got hers...

What if the strange pursuer in the fog...?

No.

You couldn't handle the thought.

It was already hard enough to imagine someone after yourself and Grim.

But why would anybody want to hurt Gwendolyn?

You felt the pressure of worry build in your stomach, each beep a blow to the sternum.

Beep.

Beep.

Beep.

After the 8th or 9th dial tone, you nearly gave up-

" ...Hello?"

The sound of Gwen's tired croak washed away all your anxiety and replaced it with relief, though you held a sigh to not confuse her.

You smiled and held the phone close.

"Hey, Gwen! I've been trying to reach you earlier, but you didn't pick up. Everything okay?"

Silence.

Your brows furrowed and you felt your worry creep into your stomach with a vengeance.

You were about to break the silence to ebb the awkwardness but Gwen did it for you instead.

"Oh, I'm okay-" she yawned, her voice unusually mellowed. "I just woke up is all."

"I see," was all you could manage.

"I checked my phone and saw how much you called," she said with her usually chipper cadence.

You felt a surge of heat fill your cheeks.

"Sorry, I was worried. Since, you know, you never picked up or left a voicemail message..."

She laughed weakly.

"I should be the one who's sorry. I didn't mean to make you upset."

"W-where are you, right now?" you held the phone closer to your ear and sat on your haunches on the couch. "If you don't mind me asking."

Silence.

Your brows furrowed, trying to piece together why she was so unusually quiet.

"Gwen?" a hint of fear and impatience forced its way through your voice without you meaning to.

The question of whether or not she had been kidnapped or not quickly leaped into the forefront of your mind, despite your increasingly faulty efforts to put it down, but you refused to show it.

Only because if you did your panic could risk making things worse.

For Gwen and you.
