He just sat there on the branches unblinkingly.

His silence frustrated you, and the branch between your legs felt uncomfortable.

"Please, just give me a reason!" You practically begged, "any reason as to why my friends had to suffer for this!"

You wanted to feel bad for him, you wanted to believe that all of this was out of desperation, or that Malleus wasn't involved with the terrible things that took place between you, your friends, and the vampires that forced you here.

You wanted to lead yourself into that naivité, that maybe, just maybe, there was a good vampire among the walls of the Draconia manor and that his hurt expression over your injuries weren't all an act just to win you over.

However he didn't seemed interested in convincing you; he just coughed and stared at you like you were speaking a foreign language.

"Malleus?! Hey! Does any of this-"

"I was not made aware of the attack that was brought against your friends that day," he said finally, his eyes closed.

You wanted to believe that, but the uncertainty in his voice made your trust waiver.

"You weren't?" You questioned.

"No," he said after a pause, which just made your distrust in his words all the more potent.

Your frustration reaching a boiling point, you got up to climb away from the tree.

"Wait, Y/N-"

Ignoring the genuine fear in his voice, you crossed your leg over and prepared to climb down, but you felt a hand grab the back of your shirt.

You looked up and saw Malleus grabbing you, the glow in his eyes making it easy to make out the twinge in his dark brows.

"What're you-"

"I had absolutely nothing to do with the incident at the Queendom prior to your arrival here! Please, let me explain!"

You studied his expression at first before making your next decision.

"First let me go."

After you were freed you got back to the tree branch opposite his position and folded your arms, the moon's light peaking through the clouds exposing both you and his frames.

The light made it easier to see his pained expression.

"The order was to locate and bring the Child of Eden safely into the mansion. All other deeds were carried out outside of my notice."

He scratched his head frantically, the crease in his brows deepening as he searched the air for a better explanation.

"I...I had been very busy this week even before your arrival; between the constant meetings between other clans and looking after my own clan's affairs, I had lost track of my soldiers."

Something burned in your chest- was it anger? Or something else?

You felt tears well up again breathing heavily as you thought of all the people who got hurt before and during your stay here.

"How do I know that, Lord Malleus?" You asked as you looked towards him, "how do know that I can trust you? So many people have gotten hurt- hell, I've gotten hurt.

And maybe some of it is my fault. But how do I know I can stay here and not have to worry about losing someone I care about?"

"You have yet to be a snack for my subordinates, yes?" His voice softened. "I've also made special measures to ensure that your fami- friend will not suffer any harm here either."

You felt his cold hands wrap around yours.

"I understand your pain, your anger and your hurt. I know what it's like to lose someone special, believe me. All I'm asking is for you to give me a chance. Let me show you the man I can be."

You felt a hand reach up to your face and fingers gently wipe away a tear trail.

His voice was warm and reassuring.

"I want to have more nights like this with you. Don't you?"

You took the hand near your face and softly squeezed it, nodding quickly.

"Yes," you breathed.

He laughed sweetly.

"I'm sure you're hungry? I shall have a servant fetch us some hors d'oeuvres."
