PHAYU
9 Months Before Rain
Phayu woke up in his garage apartment when the morning sun, shining uncaringly in his face, forced him to open his eyes.
He kept telling himself that he should change the sheer white curtains on the large windows, but the morning light was the perfect natural alarm clock for those days that he ended up sleeping here.
His mouth felt a bit fuzzy from all the drinks he had last night.
His friends from the race circuit had thrown him a party at one of their fancy penthouses to celebrate the new adulting job that he was starting on Monday.
He had graduated and just accepted a job as an architect. Everyone had been surprised that he chose a smaller, lesser-known architectural firm.
He had gotten quite a few offers from alumni and connections at larger, more prestigious firms.
Phayu was the kind of person to go all in when he wanted something. He had worked hard to be at the top of his class in University, wanting to excel at designing buildings. He maintained an exceptional grade point average and still found time on weekends to rebuild motorbikes and learn how to be an expert mechanic from his dad.
Thanks to his reputation and the design awards that he had won - national and international - many firms tried to recruit him with high salaries and perks.
He turned them all down because he didn't want to be under anyone's shadow. He was determined to do things his way and make his mark.
Phayu had two loves, architecture and engines. He wanted to devote time to both, designing for clients at the firm and being a mechanic at his family's garage.
Shrewdly, he went the 'big fish in a small pond' route so that he could work on client designs right away versus doing grunt work as an assistant at a larger firm. He could also manage his schedule to work at the garage on weekends, on the bikes and cars that he loved.
His parents dreamt of moving out of the city and living a less hectic life where they could give back to the community. They were planning on relocating to Nakhon Ratchasima, also known as Khorat, to get closer to nature and do some good with their time and money.
Phayu and his twin brother, Saifah, had been groomed for the past few years to take over the family business upon graduation so their parents can retire.
That day was finally here.
Phayu swung his legs over the side of the bed and sat up. He took a swig from the water bottle that was on the bedside table and felt a bit better.
He heard a rustle and soft groan behind him. He turned around and looked at the boy that was sprawled on the other side of the bed. His spiky hair was dyed blonde. It framed a face that was exceptionally good-looking even after a night of hard partying.
