'What a great day' you thought to yourself, sitting down on the park bench. You took out a sandwich you had packed for yourself, ready to enjoy it, but noticed a woman approach you.

She seemed tired, approaching you with her young son.

"Excuse me, could you watch... him for a bit?"

Being as polite as you were, you agreed, and he sat on the bench right next to you.

After a little bit, you noticed the boy staring longingly at your sandwich, hearing his stomach rumble as well.

"Hey kid, what's your name?"

He answered happily,
"Takami Keigo!"

You introduced yourself to him,
"I'm (f/n) (l/n). You want some of my sandwich?"

You held a slice out to him, which he observed with shock. He happily grabbed the slice, holding his police man plushie under his arm.

"Thank you mister!"

He took a big bite and after a little bit, hummed to himself happily.

"This is the bestest thing I've ever eaten ever! I didn't know food could be this yummy!"

His happiness was infectious, causing a grin to crack on your face as well.

"Thanks buddy! Made it myself,"

He looked at you with amazement,
"Woah, are you a chef?"

You shook your head,
"No, but I do enjoy cooking,"

He nodded and continued to eat his half of the sandwich. When he finished, he jumped onto the ground, a fist raised in the air,
"When I grow up, I wanna help people! Like the mister who helped me and my mom!"

You chuckled softly,
"You really love your mom, huh?"

He looked back to you, a little sad.
"Kind of... she's really mean to me sometimes... but I still love her anyways!"

You felt your heart break a bit at his words. Just what was his mother saying to him? If you were his parent, you'd do nothing but shower him with love, doing everything you could to make him happy.

But you weren't. And all you could hope to do was convince his mother to treat him better.

"So do you know what your mother went to do?"

He shook his head,
"Nope!"

The minutes soon turned to hours, and you began to think that his mother may have forgotten that she had left her son with you.

The child seemed to be getting antsy as well, not to mention chilly.

You wrapped your jacket around him, hoping that it'd help him warm up. This certainly wasn't how you were expecting to spend your day off, and you kept hoping to every god out there that his mother would return, but you soon gave up hope.

"Hey buddy, how're you holding up?"

He was shaking,
"I don't think she's coming back..."

You tried to comfort him,
"W-what makes you say that?"

He wiped his eyes with your jacket sleeve, then holding his plushie close to his chest.

"She said... she said she wished she never had me...and that I ruined everything,"

"That's a horrible thing for her to say!"

He sniffled,
"She's right... because of me my dad bullied us... and then we didn't have anywhere to sleep when got taken away..."

He began sobbing, and you tried your best to comfort him, pulling him into a hug.

You ran your hand across his back soothingly,
"Shhh, it's alright, let it all out,"

"How about we go to the police station? Maybe they'll find your mom?"

He wiped his face on your shirt before softly nodding, holding your hand with his tiny one as you began to walk. But then you noticed it. His clothes were tattered and old, his shoes barely holding on for dear life.

"Hey Keigo, do you want me to carry you?"

He nodded hesitantly before raising his arms, giving you an easy opportunity to lift him up.

He ended up curling into you, resting his head on your chest as you walked. It seemed to soothe him down, being able to hear your heartbeat.

"We'll try contacting the mother, in the meantime, he'll stay with you,"

You held the boy in your lap, who was soundly sleeping.

"What? I've only known him for a few hours, is that even allowed?"

The officer just sighed,
"Look, were stretched pretty thin right now, and after doing a background check, you seem pretty capable,"

You spoke in a quieter voice,
"Are you sure that's okay?"

"As long as you don't tell anyone,"

After a little bit more talking, you left, bringing the sleeping boy back home with you.

You didn't feel comfortable changing him yet, so you just laid him down in your bed, tucking him in under the covers.

You set up a futon beside the bed just in case he needed any attention during the night, and went to sleep yourself.

Or at least you tried to. It was hard to fall asleep after what had just happened. There was no way the mother could have just abandoned him, was there? Although maybe it would be a good thing for him to get away from her, she seemed to be emotionally abusing him.

Eventually you were able to fall asleep, but you didn't dream.
