Keigo felt his heart drop as his test paper was returned to him.

A C+? Really?!

"Dude, what'd you get on the test?"

Keigo disappointedly showed Touya his test, and received comforting pats on the back.

"It happens man,"

Touya was no stranger to bad grades. Back when he was seeking attention from his parents, he'd sometimes purposely do bad on his tests in the hopes they'd notice.

They did notice, but he quickly realized that was not the type of attention he wanted.

Keigo quickly crumpled up his test and stuffed it into his bag.

"I'm over it,"
He lied.

He felt completely crushed. He felt so confident during the test, everything seemed like it made so much sense! Where did he go wrong? He studied hard for it too!

He could only imagine how disappointed you'd be.

You always talked so much about how proud you were of him, how you wanted the best for him, how he was your number one priority.

Even if you told him that grades didn't matter to you, you still set the bar high.

The fact that you had no expectations for him made him feel pressured to be exceptional.

You couldn't see this test. You couldn't find any trace that he was just a big disappointment.

"Dude? You okay?"
Touya asked, waving his hand in front of Keigo's face.

"Huh? Yeah I'm okay, just kind of zoned out for a second,"

"It's okay if your grade's bumming you down you know. It's just one test, and I don't think your dad will care,"

That's the thing, you probably wouldn't care. But some part of Keigo felt like you secretly did, that even if your exterior showed warmness, deep down you'd be disappointed.

I mean, who wouldn't be?

For the most part, Keigo was a straight A student, getting anything less than a B+ was unheard of for him!

His perceived failure stuck with him for the rest of the school day, a void of guilt and sadness weighing down deep within his stomach.

"You wanna go to the arcade after school?"
Touya asked.

Keigo shook his head, forcing his face to look like everything was fine,
"I think I'm gonna head home, fitness class took a lot out of me,"

A bit suspicious of his friend's words, Touya went to the arcade by himself, leaving Keigo to walk home alone.

More and more of these sad thoughts filled his head.

It was his fault for doing so good on his other tests! If he had just set the bar lower by getting C's on the other tests, then your expectations wouldn't be so high!
