"Dad! Touya's here with his mom! Can I go to the park with them? Pleeeeaaaasssseeee?"
You thought about it for a moment. Touya's parents were the only ones you hadn't met yet, and even though you were friendly with the other parents, you wouldn't consider them anything more than close acquaintances.
But Touya was Keigo's best friend, meaning you'd also have to put in some effort in becoming the friend of his parents.
"Sure thing buddy! But I'll tag along too,"
He did his little happy dance and you helped him tie his shoes before leaving the house.
You saw a woman with white hair holding the hand of her son, who seemed like he couldn't contain his excitement. She locked eyes with you,
"You must be Keigo's father. I'm Rei, it's nice to finally meet you,"She extended a hand, and you shook it,
"Likewise. You-"Each of your respective sons began tugging on your hands.
"C'mon Mom, let's go!"
"C'mon Dad, I wanna go play!"You and Rei had a good chuckle over it.
•
You and Rei sat down on a bench next to each other while watching your children play together. The two of you didn't have too much in common, but it seemed like you were getting along well.
But she couldn't help but ask,
"Your son, is he...?""Yes, he's adopted. I gained custody of him a few months ago,"
She was a bit shocked,
"That recently?! The way he acts, it seems like you've had him since he was a baby!"You sighed,
"I wish that was the case. His parents before me were... you know?"Her eyes widened. What horrible people his old parents must've been! She couldn't help but wonder how anyone could abuse their children like that. She knows that she definitely wouldn't, and although her husband could be strict on the kids at times, she knew he wouldn't do anything like that either. (👁️👁️)
"I-I'm sorry for asking, I-"
"It's alright, you were just curious. Besides, I've been helping him through it, and he seems to be doing fine,"
She was just about to say something before the children approached.
Keigo spoke,
"Dad! I'm thirsty! Can I have a drink please?"You rummaged through your bag until you pulled out a juice box which you handed to your son.
He looked to Touya before looking back at you,
"Can he have one too?"You looked to the boy's mother, and she gave you a nod.
You handed another juice box to Touya, who seemed very grateful.
"Thank you! You're the best!"
The two children sat on the laps of their respective parents as they drank from their juice boxes happily.
Rei leaned over to your ear,
"Where'd you get these? Touya seems to really like it,"You whispered back to her,
"I buy them in bulk at Costco, I think they're on sale right now too!"She chuckled,
"Well I know what I'm doing this weekend,"The children quickly finished their juice, of course leaving you and Rei to dispose of the trash. The job of a parent was never done.
•
Eventually the sun began to set, and both children were thoroughly tired from their play date. You exchanged contact information with Rei, and you went your separate ways.
You held Keigo in your arms, his head resting on your shoulder as he feigned sleep.
"Did you have fun?"
"Mhm..."
He wrapped his arms around you a little tighter, almost as if he wanted to hug you. He was so appreciative of you, he just couldn't express it.
You kissed the side of his head,
"I'm glad you did, bud,"You stepped inside your house, letting Keigo sit on the floor while you helped him take his shoes off. The poor boy was struggling to stay awake at this point, his eyes slowly opening and closing.
You helped him into his pajamas before tucking him into bed. Him being super tired would be perfect for training him to sleep alone! You'd just have to hope he wouldn't wake up till morning.
You gave him a kiss on the forehead, then left his room.
