the problem with apologies

he caught her
red-handed
cheeks burning
hearts falling
frowns forming
"i'm sorry,"
she said,
but she wouldn't look
him in the eye.
sometimes, sorry doesn't cut it.

his alcohol-distorted
perception
made him lash out
bruises forming
eyes dripping
sadness swelling up
"i'm sorry,"
he said,
but enough was enough,
and she was hurting.
sometimes, sorry doesn't cut it.

she was gone now
and nothing could bring her back
and that was what hurt most of all
coffin closing
flowers drooping
dirt falling
into a small hole
that felt immensely large
"i'm sorry,"
they said,
they knew how i felt
but sorry won't bring
you back.
sometimes, sorry doesn't cut it.
