Percy's POV
"Whaaaaat?!" I gape
"it is true, Perseus, your twin sleeps in this shell, safe" Amphitrite adds "when your father first admitted his... adultery to me, I was outraged. when he showed me, Ariana, my anger cooled, the sight of Ariana's crying form kindled my mothering instinct. I adopted her." a lone tear trickles down her face
"I never remember having a twin.." I say
"That is because of what happened when you were born. your mother suspected she was pregnant with twins, and when you were born, she was right. Ariana is a few moments older than you. I was there, hidden invisibly at your mother's head. as the father, I met both of you. I could tell you were my children, but Ariana was stronger, in fact, a nurse was an emposai, trying to feed on you. I dispelled her, but she could smell Ariana's aura before she was born. I saw the signs quickly, so I modified the memories of your mother and all the doctors involved that only one child was born that day, you." Poseidon explains. "I brought Ariana here and admitted my crime to Amphitrite, who, as she said, adopted Ariana. she is your twin by birth." he finishes
"Why is she in the shell?" I ask.
"Ariana was my best lieutenant during the second Titan war. she lead my armies by my side, plunging into battle at every opportunity. she battled many monsters she nearly cut down half the attackers single-handed. she was fighting Telkhines when a battalion of reinforcements ambushed her. she ordered her squad to retreat, suffering great injuries until.." Poseidon trails off "until she revealed a godly form of pure energy. it nearly killed her. I wept over her limp form, believing she was dead" Amphitrite finishes. "she has been healing in the shell ever since, even during the second giant war."
"Just to recap. I have a twin. she's a badass. she is a tiny bit away from being a god. she nearly killed herself. she's in the shell" I said, pointing
"Yes. and the shell will only open for a member of my family. Amphitrite, Triton, Myself, and you." Poseidon said, motioning toward the shell. "it is time for her to wake up." he turns to a passing squid. "can you please fetch Triton?" he asks.
When Triton arrives, he bows to Poseidon and Amphitrite. "I understand it is time for Ariana to wake" he adds
"Yes. Percy shall do the honors." Poseidon says, motioning for me to touch the shell. I brush it with my fingers before I put my palm solidly onto its surface.
"do you wish for me to open, lord?" the shell rumbles
"yes, please," I ask it, moving my hand off. It slowly creaks open, revealing Ariana. Amphitrite blocks my view as she moves to greet her. Ariana moans softly
"Amphitrite?" she whispers.
"I'm here, darling," Amphitrite says, gently leading her out, off the clam's soft cushioning. I gasp.
Ariana's pitch-black hair floats around her head in tendrils like what happens when ink is dropped in water. her eyes are sea-green, like mine. she wears a lilac and purple jumpsuit that looks like shimmering scales, and a ring engraved with Dad's trident on her right index finger. her face looks like our mother's. she looks perfect, almost as pretty as Aphrodite and Calypso combined. she catches my eye.
"Who are you?" she asks me
"Percy Jackson. I'm your twin brother, younger by a few minutes." I say she rushes forward, grabbing me in a hug.
"Percy! are you really here? I can't believe it! weren't you battling Hyperion? we need to continue the fight!" she grabs my shoulders to study my face.
"The second Titan war has been over for years," I say. her face falls
"Did we lose?" she asks
"No. we won. you have been asleep, even during the second giant war" Poseidon cuts in
"I would have loved to fight a giant. WAIT,-I've been asleep for years!?" she hollers
"Yes. you nearly died after you revealed a godly form, Ariana" Amphitrite adds
"I-I revealed a godly form?" she stammered "I should be dead" she stared at her hands
"but you're not! and I think you should meet our mother." I said
Ariana and I rocket out of the river, landing hastily on the pavement. she grins at me
"Never traveled like that before, huh?" she puts a hand on a hip. Ariana had developed a skill that involved making a portal out of the water and shooting us through like projectiles. she sounded confident about it, but I still had doubts. I looked for the nearest street sign, jogging toward my mum's apartment.
Knocking on the door took forever. Paul pulled the door open, holding Estelle. he sees me, then flits his eyes over Ariana. he recognizes Mum in her face
"Percy! and..." he stammers
"Ariana" she cuts in. Paul opens the door for us to come in.
"Sally! Percy's home, along with a friend," he calls
"In the kitchen!" Mum calls back. Ariana sits on the couch beside Estelle, tickling her chin. she giggles
"Mom. I have to tell you something.." Mum is staring out of the kitchen window, at Ariana. she drops the plate she's holding. I swoop down and catch it. She turns to hug me, then runs to Ariana.
"Hi, Mrs. Jackson" Ariana manages before Mom is sitting next to her, touching her face, which looks spectacularly like hers.
"Who are you?" she asks. Poseidon appears in the living room. Paul looks stunned. "Poseidon" my mom stammers
"I must admit something, Sally," he says "You were pregnant with twins. Ariana and Percy. When Ariana was born, her aura was so strong a monster attacked her before she opened her eyes. I was by your side that day, protecting them. I realized that if Ariana could attract monsters at such an early age, they would be dead before they turned two. I modified your memory and all those involved that only Percy was born. I took Ariana to my domain under the sea, where Amphitrite adopted her. Ariana is your daughter by birth" he looks ashamed. "I only wanted to protect you both."
"I don't know what to say." mom stumbles. Ariana hugs her
"Mom" she whispers. mum hugs her back.
"where have you been for three years? why haven't you come back?" mum whispers
"I was fatally wounded fighting alongside dad. I was asleep in a shell, regenerating" Ariana starts crying
"For three years?" mom asks
"I revealed a godly form. I'm the closest a demigod has ever been to becoming a god without dying." Ariana held mum in a hug
"I am truly sorry, Sally, for all the grief I have caused you." he waves his hand. "I have returned you true memories. I am sorry" he disappears. mum starts crying
"I never knew I had another daughter." mum holds Ariana in a death grip.
"I want to meet Annabeth. Percy?" Ariana pulls out of mum's hold. "I will be back. I can teleport! I love you, mom" she gets one last hug "I'll be as safe as I can" mum chuckles. Ariana pulls enough water from the sink for a portal.
"Destination?" she asks me
"Camp-Half-Blood. Canoe lake" I say. the water starts swirling. we leap through.
