"I told you, everything is normal, and you rang her only a few days ago." She shook her head. "Then what?"
"It's her birthday. I'm always there." Didn't add she always organised something special, even if at home, cooking up a storm. "If I don't ring her, she will know something is wrong. I would hate to miss her birthday, and it's getting late in Australia. She goes to bed early. Please, I ask for nothing." Which was true, she didn't.
Kaden glanced at his watch, calculating the time difference, making it 8 pm.
Something she had already done.
"Only if I listen to the call. No slip-ups, I mean it."
"I won't," she promised. This was her Gran.
Unlocking his phone, he handed it across that she took, though surprised. "Thank you." Taking it, she dropped into the newest chair, near the desk. "Shall I put it on speaker?"
"No, I can tell from what you say," he waved her on.
Nodding, she opened the phone app and touched it, pressing numbers, then held the phone near her ear, fumbling with the phone when her sister answered. "Oh, hi sis," tugging at her hair, missing her plait. "Just rang to say happy birthday to Gran."
"Ellie! Is that you? Where the hell are you?!"
Ronnie was yelling down the phone. Thank goodness Gran's hearing wasn't great, and she wasn't on the phone's speaker, peeking across under her lashes, making sure he hadn't heard. Kaden was still reading over documents.
The game would be up. Not that it was a game, Ellie just wanted to keep her sister out of it. Wedding over then she would be home, and none the wiser.
"Ellie? Can you speak?" Ronnie asked in a calmer voice, tone normal.
"Can you put Gran on for me? I don't have that long. Everything's wonderful at this end. Back in a couple of weeks, as promised."
Kaden gave her a sharp look. "My sister," she mouthed.
"Listen to me, I'm coming for you. I have a tracker on the phone in case you rang." Ellie closed her eyes, twisted up her hair and tugged harder. "Did you hear me?" she asked, at her silence.
"There is no need," she said.
"Here's Gran." To be handed across.
"Hi, Gran, just ringing to wish you a happy birthday. Don't worry, I'd bring something special for you. We can even have another party if you want when I get back." She never was going to take this for granted ever again, wiping at a rash of tears. "I'm so glad sis was there for you." Very aware of Kaden listening in, even if he was reading over documents he received every day.
"Yes, Ronnie has been a great help, seen to all my needs, even a professional cook." Something she would enjoy. Not so sure about all that rich food.
"Nice. It won't be much longer and I'd be back home. It'll be like I have never left. Hug the cats for me. Yes, Gran, I'm having plenty to eat." Now, she got over the drug issue. "No, I'm not overdoing it."
Then her Gran started asking questions about the work. What it was like? Where she was? That she couldn't answer because she didn't know what Ronnie had said. Also, Ronnie didn't know she was out of Australia. "Sorry, I have to go. I will tell you all about it when I get back. Tell sis I will be home in two and a half weeks, as planned. Bye."
Ellie hung up. It wasn't the call she'd expected. What did Ronnie mean they tracked the phone to what? The caller?
Eyeing off the phone, easing forward, Ellie placed it back on the desk and pushed it towards him.
