The last thing Ellie expected from him, removing a pastry. They were very addictive. Her Gran would love these and told him so. "Only as a treat," she laughed, very aware of being watched, something she wasn't used to.
Reached for the glass for another drink, suddenly hot, licking her lips.
She must admit it was much better here, with a library, pool, and garden to be enjoyed, like having her own oasis. Apart from being held here until a wedding, peeking up under her lashes, standing there before her, hands in dark pants pockets. Rolled back sleeves of his white shirt, top two buttons undone.
Ellie can only speculate if he was royalty, which could explain how she got here without a fuss. Entry by private plane, landing somewhere in the desert. Her curiosity was piqued. Where was she, actually?
She eyed him closer, having a feeling he wouldn't tell her if she asked.
Somewhere in the Middle East. And she believed him about the reason why she was here.
The only problem with that her sister was still free, yet that didn't mean she was involved with his brother. There was nothing she could do about that. Needing to talk to her sister. That wasn't possible.
The only thing she had to fear from him was her reaction to him.
Biting into the pastry. "About yesterday," she sprayed crumbs. "Sorry," covering her mouth with her hand, until she finished what was in her mouth. "If I believe what you said," a dark brow rose as if he would lie.
Didn't he, at the ball? Let it go. That would've never happened if it had been real. She should've known that yet won't forget the dance. How it had been so magical, her first dance.
That she would remember. Not the other, as if he was interested in her. No one ever was. Even thinking she was Ronnie, he wasn't interested. Especially if he thinks she's involved with his brother. What is he going to do when he finds out she's not her sister?
God help her.
Kaden settled down on the other daybed, placing locked hands between his legs. "What part was that?"
"That you're sending me home when the wedding is on. How do I get home? I have no passport..." Ronnie did. "On me." She didn't.
"I have it."
"You do!" she gasped, eyes widened. Ronnie would freak out. Yet then again, why would she need her passport? "Really?" she frowned, not seeing Ronnie leaving it lying around unless she was planning a holiday.
"You really should lock away important documents, not in your drawer with your underwear. Were you planning a trip somewhere?" he challenged, watching her intensely.
"There was a thought of one," she offered.
Ronnie travelled overseas for business and holidays. She couldn't remember anything being said about that. So why wasn't the passport out of the safe deposit box she owned? Ronnie was all about safety. "I needed to check if it was up to date, then put it back in a secure place. Didn't get the chance before the ball."
His dark eyes swept over her, seeing he didn't quite believe her.
Ellie was sick of it. No one had ever accused her of lying. Never seen as a deceitful person. Apart from one, cheeks flaming with guilt. And she was lying, lowering her eyes, only to protect her sister, clueless as to what he would do when he found out.
"What does it matter? I'm here, aren't I?" Suddenly wanting to run and hide. Desperate to be herself, tired of it all. "Thank you for all this," she waved at the table. "I need to go back and change, see to my hair before it breaks out in a wild mess."
