Vee sat with my for sometime while the girls played near by. I felt the heat of his little body but kept my eyes half open watching the door.
"Are you alright?" Vee asked.
"Im fine Vee. Theres nothing to worry about." I told him.
"Im old enough to know that your scared." He grumbled.
"Mmmm. Everyone gets alittle scared sometimes?" I said quietly still watching the door.
"What are you afraid of?" He asked. "No one is here to fight us. They came bringing gifts. We wont be hurt."
"When you get bigger you'll understand that there are many ways to be hurt and many of them dont involve a physical fight." I told him.
He scrunched up his face when he looked at me before he started looking at the door.
"But im the adult and its not your job to worry about adults. Its ok to play with your sisters." I told him. Sneaking a brief glance at him before looking at the door again. "You and me and the girls... Were all going to be fine. "
"Promise?" He asked.
"I promise." I told him. "Even if the mountain falls down. My babies will live well." I pulled him in and took in his smell. Feeling my chest relax. "This dáme loves you very much."
He didnt try to struggle away or escape, he seemed content to stay like this in my arms. It made me happy. He was already getting so big. Soon he probably will get to big to be cuddled by me. I should have known better. Holding him was to comfortable. To relaxing. I started drifting off without knowing it.
Bang!
The door was kicked in decisivly. The heavy wooden door was splintered inwards. The furniture I had compiled was scattered over the entry way in different states of disrepair. I jumped to my feet and looked down over the balconey. I didnt hold a weapon. It wouldnt of made a difference anyway.
Talon. The second crazy brother. Usually that guy stayed in his own wing accompanied by his harem and practically drowning in the scented drugs that clung to every inch of that place. But now he was here making a mess.
"Get out." I told him from inside the bedroom. My voice carried over the balcony down to the entry below. I didn't have to raise my voice he could hear me easily.
"Come out." He told me.
"I said, Geeet ooout." Stretching the words out. I felt the kids tense up with my voice.
"There are many dragons wanting to greet you." He called up to me as if it was great news.
"They're just here to stare at my children and line up for their own!" I shouted out to him with a scowl on my face.
"Where ever they line up will be behind me. A greeting is all they can leave with today." He assured me with a laugh.
"Is that meant to be a comfort?" I scoffed. The dark circles under my eyes might rival the darkness in the abyss.
"The greeting is not negotiable, hurry up and get dressed." He said. "Or do you want me to act as your maid and change it for you?...."
I sighed.
"Clean this place up!" He told the people against the hall walls behind him.
Servants began to scramble in,picking up pieces of wood broken beyond recognition.
I wasnt exactly presentable. My hair was a mess my clothes were dirty and i hadnt slept well in days. Still, none of these things would be a good enough excuse not to go out. Last time i went to a meeting with a bunch of dragons like this... the hostility permeated each breathe. Just thinking about it made it hard to breathe.
I swallowed with difficulty thinking about it. Standing in place. Staring at the wall with big unblinking eyes. I felt Vee shake my hand. I batted my eye lashes several times in a row and shook my head to break myself out of my trance.
"Its gonna be ok." Vee told me. He rubbed his cheek against my hand.
Every instinct in me told me to hole up in the den and hang on to my kids to keep them safe but I couldn't live that way. That wasn't a choice available to me. So I quickly made myself slightly more tidy, kissed the kids, and made my way to Talon.
"Im here." I said angrily walking down the stairs. The voice came out with a dull annoyed sound rather than the crazed feeling i felt inside.
"Such a temper these days, wasnt it not long ago we had a timid house cat?" He asked but his eyes were half moons as if he were pleased to find something fun.
"Im sure you wont have trouble picking up a house cat since they like rats." I insulted him and walked through the door.
"You seem just as eager to sink your claws into me as i am to you." He laughed.
..................
We didn't go to the place i thought we would. It was on outdoor courtyard area. Vast amounts of water poured out of fountains and into pools. Tall statues of dragon people stood imortalized in polished stone. Large chuncks of crystal twice as big as a person were littered around the pool and larger pieces breached from below the water. They glittered like opals in rainbow colors in the sun.
From afar I could see that there were many familiar dragon leaders basking in the sun and swimming in the pool.
