Roka began his story. "Sirenaidea have always been beautiful creatures, and this was because of the Sea Dragoness blessing. She was our luminous creator, a giantess with scales that glittered and gleamed like starlight. She roamed the oceans bringing the empty places to life. The Sirenaidea, a never ending school that followed behind her. Being in her presence was enough to transfixed you. There was no need for food when tour eyes could be full only seeing her.
But the beasts above did not respect our Sea dragoness. They stole bounty from her waters and coveted her treasure. A single pearl embedded in her belly. One day when the Sea Dragoness climbed out of the water to have her annual walk on land, she returned injured. She threw herself into the sea and her precious Sirenaidea pulled her down to the lowest depths where the sky dragons could never reach her. Even after death her treasure continued to bless us. We grew bigger, stronger, and filled the ocean with more of our kind."
"But that doesn't explain the difference." I interjected.
"The sky dragons never stopped wanting our treasure. One day it disappeared. After it was gone the blessing slowly dissipated. While the yearly thrall is still felt by all, the eggs produced from it only create Carnals not Sirenaidea. Worse the scales of our Sirenaidea have dulled and some fall out but do not regrow as they should." He gestured to his own tail where the light of the moon reflected off the embedded shiny pieces.
"Isn't that painfull?" I asked.
"Its better to have a little pain than to be ugly." He replied. "I have faith that they will regrow one day."
I nodded my head it was hard when ur body changed in ways you didn't necessarily want. A part of me was pleased, the monstrous part. It wasn't just me that had problems. There were others out there living in difficult situations, trying the best they could with what they had. It made me feel less alone.
"I hope you get your treasure back." I said.
"We will." His face was smiling kindly but his words were filled with an undercurrent of animosity.
I had finished the Carnal. Down to the bones. With its bones I might be able to make something useful. Needles for sewing, knives, and other items.
"Are you finished?" He asked.
I nodded my head.
"Then give the bones to me." He said with his arms out.
I didn't really understand his I mlm intention but I gave the mass to him.
"What are you going to do with it?" I asked.
"What comes from the sea, should stay in the sea." He said, laying the pile next to him.
The tide seemed loud in this quiet. The sound of the water surging forwarded and then being dragged away. I layed down, not carring that the sand would coat my braid with a fine layer of grit. I put my hands on my stomach and looked up at the sky.
"How did the Sea Dragoness walk on land?" I asked looking at Roka.
"She let her tail dry out and they became legs." He replied.
That seemed like an impossibility. Legs were legs, and tails were tails. But I was also an impossibility so maybe it was a real thing.
"Can you also walk on land?" I asked.
"Not for a long time." He said laying on his side. His head propped up with one arm. Rokas tail was still submerged in the water.
"But you could if you wanted to?" I asked for clarification.
"No. Not since the loss of the Pearl." He explained.
"I see."
"What are your plans for the night?" He asked.
"I don't suppose I can sleep now that I am without fire, I'll just stay up as long as I can." I sighed.
"I can help with that." Roka said.
"Your very consistent." I said.
"Your mind is in the trench, I was only offering my conversation." He laughed.
I coughed to cover my embarrassment.
"But if you insist, I can be convinced." He continued.
"I'll have to pass tonight. I replied dryly.
"Another night then." He nodded. "Then how should we pass the time then."
"Another story?" I supplied.
"Hmm, shouldn't you give one to me then. Mutual exchange?" He shrugged.
"I suppose that's fair." I agreed. "Is there anything you want to hear."
"A story about my Pearl of course." He replied. "Where you come from, who lives there, for how long, I want to know it all." He crawled closer. The curiosity in his yellow eyes were genuine.
It's not really a secret where I come from and it's not like he could tell the dragons that I was living here, i reasoned.
"If you follow the river all the way to its source, theres a mountain where dragons live. I lived there for a for a little while and before that I lived in a valley with my family not far from there."
"Then you lived with the Green Dragons then?" He asked intently.
I nodded my head. "I mostly lived in Pyros though, that's what the village was called."
"The second Green one." He nodded. "I know him but I havent seen him in some time. What is he doing these days?"
"No ones seen him in a long time. Hes not been to the village since it was created." I said putting my arms behind my head like a pillow.
"Then hes probably wholed up in the mountain with his research, that's to bad." Roka said copying me. He layed on his back with his arms behind his head.
"Nope, I lived in his dwelling while I was there. His room hasn't been lived in at all." I persisted. "It would have been nice to meet him, give my thanks and all. Back home hes pretty revered."
"Oh?" He swishes his tail In the water.
"Well you see, he founded our village. Which is why we named it after him. The valley was everything. No one died of old age. If you weren't able to have kids before, after living in the valley you suddenly had a ridiculous amount of kids. No one was sick. Strength and youth were forever. It was a great place." I boasted.
"Then why do you not live there?" He asked.
I took a moment to think about how to say it.
"Marauders came with strange weapons and now I'm all that's left." I said without emotion. The pain had become dull. Still there but not as sharp. It was like talking about someone else's life. Things that happened to another person and In a way it did. I no longer looked like myself, if my sisters were alive today would they even recognize me. I dont think I could recognize myself.
"It was a very interesting story." Roka offered.
I yawned.
"The night has only begun and your already tired." He grinned.
"It was a long day." I agreed.
"I could guard your body, while you sleep." He offered. "You would be safe with me."
"How do I know you wont drag me down to your house?"
"The Sea Palace is verrrry safe." He shrugged.
"So you were thinking about it." I accused him.
"I'm always thinking about it." He admitted. "But I can be patient."
