Chapter 17
Stiles' hand falls limp in mine as his head whips to me, "You told him?" But by the shock taking over my body, his offensiveness drops as soon as the words leave his lips.
"I didn't. Stiles, I would never."
"It wasn't her," Theo says as Stiles' gaze shifts back to him. " I know what happened to Donovan. I know everything." The next thing I know Stiles storms toward him. His hands grip his shirt as he roughly pushes him into the fence creating another shower of sparks.
"Stiles," I fret but my voice sounds like a knockoff of itself. My whole body does. I can't properly focus on what's happening. My heart hurts. But not because of the Chimera dead right in front of me. But because of what those damned Dread Doctors made me remember. How could they do that? How could they make me relive the moment my family was murdered? When my life was turned upside down.
"I was there," Theo growls, bringing me back to the scene as he switches positions with Stiles, now slamming him into the fence. "I was at the library. Malia and Nina found the book," My eyes flicker up at the mention of my name and I try to get to my feet but my body can't stop shaking. "Malia was texting us to see where you were. She said she left you at the library. I told her I was close. When I got there, I heard the scaffolding come down."
"You saw him?"
"Just the body. I watched you and Nina come out. I was gonna say something, but then I saw the cop car. And the body was gone. I don't know who took him. I only saw what you saw, and I didn't say anything because you guys didn't."
A loud siren blares through the tension. It hits my body like a truck causing a cold shiver to overtake me.
"Nina?"
I hadn't even realised the tears that had glided down my cheeks until I could barely see the outline of the two in front of me. I hastily blink my eyes and wipe them as subtly as I can as if it would make any difference right now.
"Nina, are you okay?"
I look up at Stiles' approaching figure and quickly nod my head, "I'm fine," I mutter but my voice gives me away.
His eyes soften for a moment as he opens his mouth to speak but Theo steps in front of him, "I hate to be insensitive, but we need to go. All of us."
It's as if Stiles gets brought back to reality in a split moment, "That's not an ambulance, is it?" He breathes out looking back down at the body next to him. "We can't just leave him."
"Fine. All right, let's take him. Someone's stealing the bodies anyway, right? Here's our chance to find out who." Theo suggests before his eyes meet mine. He makes his way over and grabs onto my hand. I don't even try to stop him as he lifts my body to my feet.
"Can you walk?" He asks, surprising me with how gentle his voice sounds.
"Yeah, yeah, I'm fine," I mutter wiping my eyes again. before looking over to Stiles who looks paralysed.
"Stiles, come on. We gotta do something," Theo urges.
"You killed him," Stiles breathes out, barely above a whisper.
"In self-defence. He was going to kill us."
I feel another chill run through my body. Self-defence. My eyes drift over to both of them and I'm suddenly struck by how we've all been through this. We've all had to kill in self-defence. We may be three different people; Werewolf, Ōkami and Human. But we've all been in the same boat. Maybe there are finally people who would understand why I did what I did.
