Chapter 21

The moment I step inside the house, the air feels thick, almost suffocating. I hesitate at the doorway, the weight of the silence pressing against me. Malia, Theo, Scott, and Stiles are gathered in the lounge, but no one speaks, no one moves. The expressions on their faces say it all: we're no closer to finding Liam and Hayden than we were before.

I clear my throat, the words barely forming. "Kira's okay," I say, my voice unsteady as I take the plunge and step into the room. All eyes snap to me, their faces a mixture of exhaustion and apprehension. "But her dad confessed so... he might get arrested."

A heavy silence settles over us, thicker than before. My gaze shifts to Theo, who leans back casually, his expression unreadable. Not a trace is left of what happened earlier.

"Did she do it?" Malia asks, bringing my attention back to her.

"No, not her,"  I say quickly, shaking my head. "The fox... maybe."

Scott's eyes flash with renewed hope, "Did you find anything about Liam and Hayden?" Scott asks, his voice almost pleading.

My stomach sinks into my chest. "No, I didn't find anything."

Hope flashes out of his eyes instantly, his shoulders slumping with the weight of the disappointment. Theo's gaze catches mine again and he holds it, neither of us wanting to say anything about what happened just an hour ago.

Before anyone can break the silence, Scott storms up the stairs without saying a word.

"Scott!" I call after him, instinctively following a few steps behind.

Upstairs, Corey's voice cuts through the tension, light and teasing."Sorry, I'm only on chapter two. I'm kind of a slow reader."

"Oh, that's okay, Corey," Mason, reassures lightly.

"He's right." Scott snaps, his tone sharp, relentless. "We don't have time for that, anyway."

"No, Scott. Don't!" Lydia's warning cry comes a split second before the sound of flesh tearing rips through the air. My heart stops as I race up the remaining steps, my breath caught in my throat.

Scott stands there, claws dug into the back of Corey's neck. My pulse skyrockets as panic floods me.

How could he do that? How could he put Corey's life in danger like that? We could've found another way.

"Don't get too close," Lydia warns as the others spill into the room. Scott and Corey are frozen, their bodies twitching, as if each of them is seeing images flashing through their eyes.

"What is he doing?" Theo asks, taking a cautious step forward, his voice laced with both curiosity and caution.

"Tapping into Corey's memories," Lydia replies pursing her lips. "It's usually something only Alphas do."

He takes a couple more steps into the room, looking genuinely intrigued, "Is it as dangerous as it looks?"

"Probably more." Stiles mutters from the corner, his arms crossed tightly over his chest.

"Does anyone know if it's working?" Mason questions, anxiously eyeing Corey.

"If anyone knows what they're doing, it's Scott," I say. I'm not sure if I'm trying to reassure him or myself more.

This doesn't feel right.

Why would he risk doing this? Especially without talking it through?

Scott gasps suddenly, his claws retracting as he stumbles backwards. I reach out instinctively to steady him, Stiles doing the same, as Lydia rushes to Corey's side.
