Chapter 20

The fear that coats my body at the very thought of Liam and Hayden with those things is enough to send me racing around town without a second thought.

I never spent much time with Hayden but Liam... he's Scott's beta. He's part of the pack. We can't lose him. We can't lose either of them.

We split ways at the school to cover more ground. But where the hell would 3 Dread Doctors choose to conduct experiments on people? It would have to be isolated - away from prying eyes.

Scott and Malia check the woods. Lydia and Mason try to get Corey to remember his time with them. While I decide to search abandoned buildings around the town. Places where no one would hear screams.

But my fear mixes with something else, a gnawing unease in my stomach. If the Dread Doctors made us hallucinate fears to distract us, then why did I see Lucia? But more importantly, if she was just a trick of the mind then why was there vulnerability in her eyes? The Lucia I knew never showed vulnerability. So why would my mind make her appear like that?

Am I feeling guilty?

No. Of course not.

I shake the thought from my head.

"Liam!" I yell breaking the lock of my third abandoned building. An old warehouse judging by the rusting equipment and stale air. "Hayden!"

The sound of wind whistling through broken windows is my only reply.

Room after room, I search. Empty. Dust-covered. It doesn't look like anyone has been here for a while.

"Damn it." I curse feeling the hopelessness seep through me once again.

This is impossible. There are countless places that they could be hiding and many more we don't even know of. They could've done anything to them already. They could be-

I cut off the thought before it spirals, forcing myself to keep searching. I'm about to give up when a sudden crash echoes through the building

I freeze.

"Liam?"

Silence.

I take a cautious step in the direction of the noise. Then another crash. Louder.

"Liam!" I sprint toward the stairs, my heart pounding as I descend into the basement. As soon as I reach the room it's quiet. Light peaks in through basement windows. Not enough to light up the area, but just enough to see shadows dance around the room.

Something catches my eye in the corner of the room.

A figure? It's too dark to tell.

I strain my ears. A heartbeat - faint, but there.

A wave of anxiety floods me. This can't be Liam or Hayden. They wouldn't be here alone. This is someone else.

Fingers trembling, I reach into my pocket and pull out my phone, switching on the flashlight. The beam cuts through the darkness, illuminating the figure in front of me.

My breath catches.

My phone slips out of my hand, hitting the floor with a dull thud.

The figure steps forward into the light, revealing glowing eyes, jagged fangs and elongated claws. His ashy blonde hair clings to his pale, sickly skin. But something's wrong. His fangs are too sharp, his claws too long. A black haze swirls around his darkened eyes, filled with something purely sinister - with only one goal in mind. And I'm sure I'm not going to like it.
