I wake up feeling fresh but different. The day was good, sun beaming through my windows, I place my phone on the desk and open my curtains.
I start my day with a shower then head down to the kitchen. I place my laptop on the island as I wait for my sister to call. Trying not to remember yesterday, his words pierce me. It was my fault for thinking he would want me because he praised my body. Thats what people do when their in the mood, they say things to make each other feel good but it's all fun and game.
While I pour myself a cup of orange juice, Xavier joins me for breakfast. He's dressed in a black suit with his hair scruffy as it was last night.
His slender body walks past me as he gets a pastry from himself and one for me. My laptop rings and I pick my sisters call.
Her face pops up on my screen, "Octavia, wow you look old." she says happily.
I scrunch my nose, "Old? I haven't spoken to you in a while and all I get is old?" Aziza laughs as she catches me up on the latest gossip back home.
"Anyways, how are you, living with a total stranger in a whole different country?" She speaks in arabic as she's aware Xavier was near me.
"It's something different, Spain is so beautiful and everyone here is so kind." My sister looks at me with a glum face. I can tell she is alone at home but atleast she has our cousins to keep her company.
There was a few seconds of silence. I look at my screen and smile, "patience sister. I meant what i said before i left. I'll take you in just give me time." I say in our mother language.
Although she is mothers birth child, I don't know what she is capable of. Aziza will not be her victim as long as I am alive. When one goes through the pain they would make sure their loved ones don't go through it too.
I was able to handle it after a year but my little sister is too fragile and well she needs me.
Worried eyes meet mine as she says, "Promise?" I almost feel sorry for her, I blame myself for leaving her, I should have kept her here even if Xavier would say no.
"I promise little sis, trust me okay?" She nods her head then we change the subject.
Xavier and I already agreed to visit my family in Jordan in a few weeks. He has a week off work which is enough time for me to be with my sister.
I didn't cry on my wedding day. A lot of girls cry leaving their family yet I didnt feel anything. The worst thing is I don't even feel guilty. I miss my sister so much but ever since mother started beating me, it's been difficult feeling anything other than the stinging pain on my body.
After I end the call with my sister, I close my laptop with Xavier leaning his back on the island, drinking my orange juice.
He looked straight into thin air sipping out of my cup. I put one of my elbows on the counter and face him.
"What did you mean about your sister being under you care?" He asks turning his head down to me. My gaze meets his. "You understood?"I whisper. He heard everything.
"I'm went to the best private school in the country, being bilingual shouldn't surprise you, what are you protecting her from?" He asks nonchalantly.
He won't let this go, this is what he does. He invades my privacy, wants to know everything but I won't give in.
I don't know why but he clearly hates me and could use anything I say against me. I can't trust him no matter how good he makes me feel.
I shake my head, "Nothing she's just missing me, we grew up closely." I say playing with my ring.
