She looked between Liam, Emma and her dad.
"No. They're just classmates," she mumbled.
"Oh. Well it's nice to meet you. I'm Kade, Lizzie's dad."
Emma smiled. "Hello Mr Kade, I'm Emma." She smiled at him and went up to the counter. "Your daughter is beautiful. Can I have a chocolate crumble cupcake?" she asked. Lizzie blushed and looked away.
"Oh, well thank you. And coming right up Emma." He got the cupcake, clearly trying not to glare at her. "Is that for here or to go?"
She looked at Lizzie and said, "For here please." He smiled tightly and got her a plate. She thanked him and took her cupcake to Lizzie's table.
"How are you Lizzie?" She asked being friendly. Lizzie searched for any signs of sarcasm.
"I'm fine I guess." She mumbled. Emma smiled and sat down next to her. Liam looked jealous and sat down too.
"What books did you get? Ooh, Culture and Conquest in Mongol Eurasia. That looks interesting." Lizzie blushed and looked away.
"Dad can I please have an apple muffin please?" she asked, just loud enough for him to hear. "Coming right up." He started on the muffin and went into the kitchen. He returned a moment later with a small apple muffin on a plate. She gave him a small smile.
"Thank you." He nodded and went back to his customers.
"What are you doing here Emma?" she asked quietly.
"Oh nothing much. I was hungry and I'd heard of this place, so now I'm here." She smiled at her and Lizzie looked down at her muffin and picked it up. It was small enough it could be cupped in her hands, and it had a little cinnamon sprinkled on the top, just how she liked it. She nibbled on it a little as she listened to all the talkative girl had to say. She watched out of the corner of her eye as Liam grew more and more annoyed with the girl across from him. Lizzie got out her sketchbook and started absentmindedly flipping through it.
She hadn't realized Emma had stopped talking and was studying her intently.

Emma was watching how the quiet girl's brown eyes focused on her art. How her eyes, her slit pupils, danced over the pages. How her hair was always slightly in her eyes, masking her fair face. She smiled and caught Liam's glare on her. He gestured for them to go somewhere else and she nodded, intrigued.
"I'll be right back," she said to Lizzie. She looked up and nodded.
Emma got up and Liam followed. They stepped out of the shop and sat at a table outside. Liam's cool gaze stayed on her the whole time.
"Ok, what do you want?" She asked coldly.
"I was with Lizzie first. I don't like how you just waltz right over like you guys are friends. Stay away from her. I have powerful people in my life you don't want to mess with," he said with a confident smirk.
Emma laughed. "Yeah right. You can't do anything to me. And last I checked, you two weren't friends either." She smirked. "And I won't be 'Staying away from her'. I have a bet to make." This peaked his interest.
"Oh. And what would that be?"
She looked him dead in the eye. "Lets see who she falls for first."
He had a humorous look in his eye. "What makes you think she is bi?"
Emma smirked. "I know she is at least a little gay. I mean, what straight girl dies her hair green? What are you afraid?"
He smiled. "For you. Game on, though. What do I win when I make her fall for me?"
Emma smiled. "You get to date her. But If I win, I want you to revoke your friendship with her."
He looked her in the eye. "Deal." They shook hands and went back in.
"You two alright?" Lizzie asked.
Emma smiled sweetly. "Yep. We're great."

When Lizzie finally ditched the two of them, she went home.
She walked because her dad was still working and she needed the exercise. When she got home she went up to her room. It was a retro 80s themed room. With purple LED lights and neon posters of Micheal Jackson and Prince. Her bed had a ton of pillows on it with geometric patterns on them.
Her cat, Ruffles, was sleeping on her bed. Ruffles was a fat orange tabby with a sassy personality. She set her books down and went over the day.
"It was my first day of school and I'm pretty sure two people were trying to flirt with me." Ruffles looked up and yawned. She laughed and stroked her grumpy cat's back. She sighed. "Tomorrow can only get better. Or worse." She pressed her hands to her forehead and groaned. She was only stressing herself out more. She got out her homework and got to work.
She paused on a particularly difficult question and went downstairs momentarily to get her favorite snack, ruffles chips, and stopped to see her papa.
"Papa you in here?" she asked, poking her head into their garage.
A muffled "yeah" came from somewhere in the back. She walked back and her papa was standing over something.
"What are you doing?" she asked softly.
"Oh nothing much, sweety. Just work." She nodded and walked over to where he was standing. "Oh Papa, it's beautiful." He nodded but a serious look stayed on his face.
"Yes but it is missing something." She looked at it harder and saw what he meant.
"You're right." She looked a moment longer. "It needs some paint on it." His face lit up.
"You're absolutely right Lizzie! Could you get me some gold from the shelf?" She nodded and ran off. She started to think about Emma and what she said about her being beautiful. Did she mean it? She shook her head.
She wasn't watching where she was going and tripped on a paint can. She stumbled and caught herself on a shelf. She noticed a moment to late that it was the paint shelf. She had but a moment before a heavy, paint filled can of paint landed on her face. She cried out and her papa came running.
He saw his daughter holding her face crying quiet hot tears and ran up to her.
She turned to him and he saw she was covered in paint and she had a big, red mark on her eye where she got hit by the can.
